China today has a lot of problems, most of their own makings. Shortage of coal is going to cause a lot of problems, one of which is the production of Aluminium which is very energy demanding.

Aluminum demand is increasing as electrification of autos expands.

Batteries add tremendous weight. Automakers will look to use more aluminum to offset some of those weight gains.

China positioned itself well for the long run. In the short run, it is going to have some industry pains.

Xi Jinping is actually doing the right thing

China’s state-run, state-directed capitalism is rife with crony-capitalism, fraud and over-investment in many areas - real estate particularly, but also basic materials like steel and aluminum. Over-investment has destroyed many global markets, and made these mostly state-owned companies perpetual loss-makers and capital destroyers.

While China has exported that surplus, and thus destroyed Western jobs and economies also, Xi Jinping seems to be finally doing something about ending such blind investment

Aluminium Smelting in Iceland

Why Iceland? From what we know about the energy requirements for smelting aluminium, countries such as iceland that have untapped hydroelectric dam potential stand to be perfect contenders in the search for low cost electricity. When profit is your bottom line, lower input costs are what you seek.

There are currently 3 operating aluminium smelters in Iceland. As much of the world’s bauxite is refined into alumina in other countries, Iceland smelts solely the alumina into aluminium rectifying the problem of red mud waste on Icelandic ground. (Iceland would not have the comparative advantage in refining, as refining is not energy intensive as is smelting) In 2010, Iceland only contributed about 2% of the world’s aluminium smelting production (780 thousand metric tons).

Low cost electricity....I guess huge computer systems for Bitcoin mining is also a feature.

I can read a summary much faster than I can watch a video. There are only so many hours in a day!
