Ford Health System is turning to immigration to solve its ongoing nursing shortage. The Detroit-based health system filed paperwork last week with international recruiting firms to hire 500 nurses from the Philippines over the next few years.
Henry Ford Health has about 1,000 open nursing positions across its five hospitals and outpatient centers and is struggling to keep up with its patient load, Bob Riney, COO and president of health care operations, told Crain's from the Mackinac Policy Conference on Mackinac Island.

Even here, some people are so sensitive to any criticism on this topic.
Nope just an associates. 2 years the problems is the hospitals short staff so badly that nurses are overwhelmed. Pay is an issue but staffing is the issue. The hospitals refuse to hire enough nurses to staff properly trying to save a buck. It’s been like this for at least 20 years. It’s poor management that causes this shortage.
For some reason there are strict limits on the number of trainees that are admitted to nursing programs. The same is true of dental hygienists.
The social worker programs are enormous and growing.

I hope that the Filipino nurses coming over have a good advocate and are t taken advantage of. I hope they’re paid at the same rate.

Something like 700 islands. Also, my girlfriend and her daughter graduated from university over there (and paid for it themselves!); not everyone is impoverished.

Looks to me if you want to be seen by American Nurses and Doctors, you will need to go south of the boarder.
That is where they will go to work in their profession.
The Hospital systems are firing them all as fast as they can import obedient, cheap replacements.
You left off a zero .... there are more than 7000 islands in The Philippines.

Many, perhaps a majority, are natural born Americans. Thus it makes sense to recruit from the Phillipines as there are no visa issues, just the expenses of relocating. They grow up fluent in English, and for many of these English is there first language.

Similar to American Samoa, the Philippines and the Panama Canal Zone were unincorporated US territories that Congress never extended birthright citizenship to. Consequently the people born in the Philippines prior to independence were only non-citizen US nationals, not US citizens. At the time of Philippine independence, non-citizen US nationality was stripped from those who got it by connection with the Philippines. See 8 FAM 308.6

There have been some recent legal cases challenging the fact that American Samoans do not get US citizenship, but they have been unsuccessful. If they had been successful, the same logic could also imply that people born in the Philippines before independence are US citizens too.
Well.....this should make one of the most prolific FR VPs happy.

In this instance, an invasion of natural born American citizens. Are ANY of you people aware that the Phillipines was an American territory, and when given their independence many chose to keep their citizenship, passing this down to their children and grandchildren? Those well educated AMERICAN citizen nurses, who by the way received superb nurses training, speak English, and may well be 5th or 6th generation Americans, or greater. Are you?
I think he’s on a cruise. So he may be busy. This is what he wanted. Americans exercising their constitutional rights replaced with foreign born personnel. Then again he gets his kicks being treated like royalty being catered to on the Norwalk cruise lines.
