In 1980, I put on Sergeant from Senior Airman. In other words, I got my white star. I was then a white supremacist among all the airmen.

I went from SrA to SSgt in minimum time, and because you cannot be promoted from SrA to SSgt directly, you are promoted "Sergeant for a Day." As a fluke, the date of the promotion ceremony fell on the one day I was Sergeant.

So after asking around on whether I should show up to the ceremony with my SrA or my Sgt stripes on my uniform, I decided to be technically correct and have Sgt stripes sewn onto my Combination 1 uniform for the ceremony, and separated less than a year later.

I never did have SSgt strips sewn onto my Combination 1 jacket.

I went from Sr Amn to Sgt in about one month and then after three years and nine months time in service I sewed on Staff.   But I went in for six years and got two stripes in basic training so that bump helped.
