Space Force Reveals Insignia for Enlisted Ranks
Air Force Magazine ^ | 20 Sep 2021 | Greg Hadley

Posted on 09/21/2021 5:51:04 AM PDT by Alas Babylon!

Chief Master Sgt. of the Space Force Roger A. Towberman unveiled the insignia for the new service’s enlisted ranks Sept. 20, with nods to its Air Force roots and heavy use of deltas and hexagons.

The base design for Specialist 1s features a dark blue hexagon, with a white delta in the middle. “The six-sided border surrounding the insignia represents the USSF as the sixth branch of the U.S. Armed Forces,” the service said in a statement. The hexagon has also appeared in the emblems for the service’s three garrisons.

For grades E-2, E-3, and E-4, the insignia adds horizontal stripes, inspired by a proposal from Chief of Staff Gen. Hoyt Vandenberg in 1952 for the Air Force’s insignia, as the service was first developing its own identity separate from the Army. Vandenberg Space Force Base, Calif., is named in his honor.

“We honor his vision with our modern rendition of the classic concept,” the Space Force’s statement reads. “Space Force specialist stripes represent ‘terra firma,’ a solid foundation of skills upon which the Space Force, represented by the Delta, is built.”

For noncommissioned officers, the insignia features traditional chevrons: three for sergeants, four for technical sergeants. It also has the “Delta, Globe, and Orbit,” representing “the totality of our Space Force.”

Senior noncommissioned officers add what the Space Force calls “orbital chevrons” atop a globe. These chevrons represent low-Earth, medium-Earth, and geosynchronous orbits, the service said, with the delta placed above the globe and in orbit to signify the “higher level of responsibility” and “willingness to explore and innovate” of master sergeants, senior master sergeants, and chief master sergeants.

For Towberman’s own rank, Chief Master Sergeant of the Space Force, the new insignia adds back the delta over the globe, as well as a pair of stars and a braid around the Delta, Globe, and Orbit.

Since its founding in December 2019, the Space Force has revealed its emblem, official flag, and service-specific ranks. However, the service is still developing its own uniforms, grooming policies, and PT standards. Officials have said the new uniforms will be revealed by the end of 2021.

I was just reading the Twitter feed on this graphic.

Man, the number of Leftards still suffering from Trump Derangement Syndrome there is YUUUGE.

All of them though Biteme and Nanzi would/should cancel the Space Force; not because it is needed or not, but because Trump did it.

Did they really align the uniform buttons marching band style? On a tunic that covers the tie instead of a vee opening?

Why call them sergeants instead of creating a whole new name? Sergeants are in charge of people, while Interplanet Janet and her Cosmic Crew are in charge of keyboards and screens.

Is their camouflage going to be black with millions of bright white dots on it so they can blend into outer space?

Why did they put a globe on the senior enlisted ranks? It's Space Force, not Planet Force. They missed the opportunity to put the Milky Way Galaxy on it.

No time for (Staff) Sergeants? You move right from Sergeant E-5 to Technical Sergeant E-6?

No Gunnery Sergeant - who’s in charge of the photon torpedoes and phasers?

The Transporter Chief will do double-duty until they get this stuff sorted out.

That term was used for students in the space school.

Space Cadets upon graduating from the academy become (adopting my best Italian accent) -- Spec-E-men (Specimen, of course).

I went from Sr Amn to Sgt in about one month and then after three years and nine months time in service I sewed on Staff.   But I went in for six years and got two stripes in basic training so that bump helped.

Yawn...
Big whoop on the chevrons...

How about the details on:

  1. the frilly lace on their skivvies?
  2. the pretty ribbons & bows on their shoes and boots?
  3. the medals and lanyards for the Advanced Dance Class levels?
  4. the combat ribbons for foreign bathhouse wars?
  5. the Pink Heart Medal for a rupture anus?

Back in my days in the USN, Seaman recruit (SR) was the boot camp rank (E-1), Seaman apprentice (SA) after graduation (E-2) until promotion to Seaman(SN E-3) by passing exams and practical factors. If a Seaman passed the fleetwide exam for a specialty but no slots were available he became a designated striker, for example Boatswain’s Mate Seaman (BMSN). The promotion to E-4 created a Third Class Petty Officer, designated by specialty as in BM3 for Third Class Boatswain’s Mate.

If engineering was the recruit’s desired specialty they’d substitute Fireman (FR, FA, FN) for Seaman.

All this was over half-a-hundred years ago but mem’ry seems to serve me ok.

What was Davy Jones like?
;)

You guys had so many uniforms, I had no idea whom to salute when I first saw Navy personnel at the DLI at Lackland AFB.
I was just out of Basic.

If a service chooses to name a rank “sergeant” then it should be the same as other sergeants in the Marines and the army.

It was always irritating to have Air Force NCOs one pay grade lower than my NCOs, yet carry the same rank title as men with years more experience..

That’s not an answer to the question asked, but I’m not emotionally invested in either the answer nor discrepancies between DoD departments.

My original post was just pointing out how it was different from my time in the USAF, that’s all.

I’m amazed at all the old fogies saying how awful it is.

Let me tell you, EVERY generation of mates, chiefs, and sergeants hated the new uniforms whenever and where ever they appeared.

I’m sure Civil War vets bemoaned losing the campaign cap, the old Navy tars hated losing their hair queue, horse soldiers the wide-brim hat, WWI doughboys the Brit helmet, leggings for spads, and the Army Air Corps never wanted to give up the silk scarfs and googles.

Yes, the Air Force—and now the Space Force—enlisted are not infantry men or Marines. They’re not trained to do those jobs and will likely be killed if they tried.
Everybody knows this and most don’t look down from their high horse at them just for doing the roles their service gave them.

But let’s not jump on them. Creating the Space Force was President Donald Trump’s work, not the Woke generals.

Everybody has an opinion about ranks, duties and uniforms, but only one will be chosen.

Let’s not devolve by calling all the Guardsmen (yes, that’s what the Space Force is calling their military members!) a bunch of weak, perfumed princesses.
