When I was a kid we had a local weatherman who was like a trusted fixture, everyone was sad when he finally retired..
His name was Don McNeely KFVS TV. His daughter then became the weathergirl and carried on the family tradition...
I grew up in southeast Missouri and watched Don McNeely on the evening news. He was an institution, as were many of the on-air staff at KFVS. I believe Channel 12 has had only three chief meteorologists in its history: Don McNeely, Bob Reeves and most recently, Grant Dade. Their morning and evening news anchors, Jim Burns and Mike Shain, were on the job for 36 and 39 years, respectively, before retiring.
KFVS was one of those stations were broadcasters could spend a career and a lot of them did. Now, with investment banker owners (who control most of the broadcasting companies), the emphasis is on younger and cheaper, especially the latter.
