While Mike Pence was lauded by Democrats — and widely criticized by the president and the Republican base — for his refusal to overturn the results of the election won by Joe Biden in 2020, it turns out that a different vice president may have been responsible for the decision.
In the upcoming book Peril, Robert Costa and Bob Woodward write that then-Vice President Pence reached out to 74-year-old Dan Quayle — who served as vice president from 1989 to 1993 under President George H. W. Bush — in the waning days of the Trump presidency.
"Over and over, Pence asked if there was anything he could do," Costa and Woodward write, suggesting that Pence was looking for a way to acquiesce to Donald Trump's demands that he reject the electoral votes legally-cast in Biden's favor.
According to the book, Quayle quickly put the kibosh on any effort to overturn the election, telling Pence: "Mike, you have no flexibility on this. None. Zero. Forget it. Put it away."
When Pence "pressed again," the authors write, he did so by explaining that he was under pressure from Trump. (A spokesman for Pence did not respond to a request for comment on Peril.)
"You don't know the position I'm in," he told Quayle, according to the authors, to which Quayle responded: "I do know the position you're in. I also know what the law is. You listen to the parliamentarian [who issues rulings about congressional authority]. That's all you do. You have no power.'"

On January 6th you had people claiming fraud and that's it. No court had reviewed the claims. No evidence was presented to the Justice Department or state authorities. Nothing like that at all. And to this date there as still been no evidence reviewed in court and no legal findings of fraud. Until then it's just unsubstantiated claims.
Not a single state legislature sent in a second certificate. In a couple of instances you had a minority of members from the legislature submitting a second slate but they had no legal or legislative authority to do so. So by law Pence could only consider those certificates that came from the state. A single certificate in every case.
Given that the only way to refuse a state's votes was through the challenge process several senators and congressmen attempted. Without a majority vote in both houses the challenges failed.
Don't forget that Romney's niece played a role in this as chairwomyn of the RNC -- she should have been funding lawsuits against ballot harvesting in Kali (and elsewhere) immediately after the profligate 2018 cheat in Kali. She would have only needed one suit to catch on with a Federal judge to block GA/PA/MI/WI ballot harvesting in 2020.
Meanwhile the DNC directly sourced their own funds to force GA SOS Raffenshitter to his knees in GA in March 2020 and accept an unconstitutional vote 'compact' that opened the floodgates for the Democrat voter fraud.
If he had no power, than the constitution would not have specified "President of the Senate."
Anyone could have done it, but the fact that it specified a particular office means that office has the power to oversee what is done.
Woah cowboy! "Overturn" is way way way beyond what anyone is claiming. Pointing out that it was fraud is not "overturning" anything, it's demanding that an actual election be conducted.
Stop using the enemy terminology.
Pence was stuck only if you believe these rules are more important than the will of the people.
Well yes, since nobody is alleging the word "overturn" which is basically an enemy lie.
The President of the Senate cannot "overturn" a valid election. He can refuse to allow a clearly crooked and fraudulent election to proceed, and he also has an absolute duty to stop a fraudulent election from going through.
Stop using that "overturn" bullsh*t. That's enemy propaganda.
He wasn't "stuck". He could have said "F*** you all, i'm not going to be a party to this crooked coup!"
What a little bitch he was. The worst that could happen from standing up to the steal is he gets kicked out of office anyway, and now he not only gets kicked out of office, he is considered a stupid little bitch by everyone as well as a coward and a traitor.
Had he refused to go along with it, at least he would still have respect from the party and there was a possibility he might have retained the office and gone on to become president himself.
But he threw it all away by making a very wrong and very bad choice of going along with the steal.
This is exactly correct. They use their powers of office to declare themselves the winner of an election, we should do the same thing and throw the whole thing into a crises that it so very badly needed to be.
You've got to be kidding.
LOL! No proof of fraud.
See my reply 81.
Exactly. He should have stopped this fraud from moving forward if he had to set fire to the place.
Why do we even bother with the Constitution if it does not exist to STOP this very thing?
Pence wasn’t asked to “rule” about anything. That’s Clinton-speak. He was just requested to give more time for review. That WAS appropriate given the timeline.
We get that you love Biden. He’s your guy. But this is the wrong forum.
Must I?
Disagree. The Constitution would not specify this work be done by a specific office unless such office was expected to exercise discretion.
Ok, so what exactly would you consider proof?
Why are you trying to compare a fair election without corrupt to an election that was clearly corrupt and manipulated by democrat controlled cities in major swing states?
It would not have been World War III because there never would have been such massive and such obvious cheating from our side.
But not given the Constitution and the laws in place at the time. January 6th is the date set by law. Pence's sole duty was to see that the votes from the states were opened and counted. That's what he did. Any disputes over the votes were up to Congress to handle.
We get that you love Biden. He’s your guy.
You get it wrong.
