Big gap between Pfizer, Moderna vaccines seen for preventing COVID hospitalizations

Amid persistent concerns that the protection offered by COVID-19 vaccines may be waning, a report released Friday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention finds that America's workhorse shot is significantly less effective at preventing severe cases of disease over the long term than many experts had realized.

Data collected from 18 states between March and August suggest the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine reduces the risk of being hospitalized with COVID-19 by 91% in the first four months after receiving the second dose. Beyond 120 days, however, that vaccine efficacy drops to 77%.

Meanwhile, Moderna's vaccine was 93% effective at reducing the short-term risk of COVID-19 hospitalization and remained 92% effective after 120 days.

Overall, 54% of fully vaccinated Americans have been immunized with the Pfizer shot.

The surprising findings came as a Food and Drug Administration advisory panel recommended against offering booster doses of the Pfizer vaccine to all Americans ages 16 and older. In a striking rebuke, 16 of 18 experts told the agency it had not mustered enough data to make a third shot the norm.

I think it’s refreshing when President Trump uses the sh-word.

So yeah, I think Jim is wrong on that one. F-word, C-word - sure, those are cussing and and swearing - but there’s nothing wrong with the sh-word. It’s about on on par with “ass”.

The sh-word is just a useful word, for which there is really no sanitized substitute.

Unless you would prefer I say crap, dung or bowel movement.

My wife was diagnosed with COVID. She has Moderna and I have Pfizer. Hers is like a bad cold with coughing, fever and loss of taste but she’s on the upswing...”

Glad to hear you are both getting better. My wife got it first and she could barely get out of bed the first two days. Had to use a wheelchair to get her into the doctor’s office, she was that weak.

I got it a couple of days later. Like a bad cold, runny nose, cough, no fever but I lost my sense of smell. I could put my nose into Vaporub and not smell anything. We were both prescribed steroids and an antibiotic. Started feeling better within a couple of days. Neither of us are 100% yet though.

My cousins son and his family have all had COVID twice. They had the original one and then about a month ago all got it again. Probably delta. None were really sick though even though the wife and son are kind of fat. Lol. I don’t think any of them have been vaccinated.

The definition of “disease” is that the pathogen or condition does you harm.

Vaccines do not necessarily prevent infection, in fact, you have to have SOME level of infection for your vaccine-primed active immune system to react. A vaccine triggers an active immune response to an infection such that the infecting pathogen does not advance to disease (harm).

Cont’d: Many vaccines effectiveness wears off - heck, I’m due for a tetanus booster shot. (Recommended every 10 years.) Some wear off faster than others, and, some become weak or ineffective due to pathogen variants — flu being a noticeable example. Heck, has there ever been a year when the flu vaccine was judged over 75% effective? And that doesn’t even count mild flu cases that the victims thought were just a bit of a cold. If those were considered, I’m not sure the flu vaccine ever gets over 50% efficacy. (And don’t ask me what the criteria for the flu vaccine is anyway: Sick enough to see a dr. or go to a clinic?)

I assume you must have a compromised in some way immune system to be eligible for a 3rd Moderna shot. Just curious, if you do not mind, what was your reaction to your 2nd shot?

I ask because I wonder how well my Moderna shots “took” even though I have no immune system issues I know of, other than I do have trouble throwing chest colds, sometimes. My second shot gave me a sore arm and shoulder big time, but, I did NOT have the fatigue / “sorta sick” reaction the following day(s). My wife was absolutely pasted the day after — went to work and came home mid-morning and slept until early the next day, upon which she was fine. But, her arm was never as bad as mine. Granted she’s a bit younger than I. My H.S. age daughter was headachy and very fatigued the next day too, but, again, her arm was not as bad as mine.

By comparison, except for my arm / shoulder, I felt unusually good / energized the 3 days after getting my 2nd Moderna shot. That makes me wonder how well the vaccine “took” in me.

That sounds like, perhaps, an immune system issue.

J&J tests did show lower efficacy than Pfizer and Moderna, so, it (your response) might not be uncommon.

Whatever was in those 2 Moderna vaccines, they sure had a nasty kick. 3 days of misery per shot, which I welcomed! It isn't illness and it keeps me from ending up on a ventilator. I don't understand what causes vaccinated individuals to fear exposure to Covid? The vaccine has functioned as expected for those with breakthrough Covid infection: the course of the illness resembles a flu or cold, i.e., survivable even for those with weakened immunity.

You’re delusional.

Probably more people have already been killed, with many more maimed, from the bioweapon shots as had to die of the virus itself, had we simply promoted the safe and inexpensive prophylactics and treatments that our overlords already well knew about. (Instead they have tried to shut such down, while instead paying hospitals both cash and indemnity for pushing killer Remdesivir and ventilators.

Meanwhile the widespread vaccination has not only led to nasty variants that will only get worse over time, but also shedding of the deadly spike proteins from the vaxxed to the unvaxxed, and the digital ID by which our overlords plan to micro-control the survivor slaves.

But other than that, how do you like the shots?

I’d think the recipients would be lucky if it were spoiled and no longer effective

I don’t think do. The ingredients are harmful.

First they pit the Masked against the Mask-less.

Then they pit the Vaxxed against the Un-Vaxxed.

Now then pit the Modernaites against the Pfizerettes, or is the Modernaettes against the Pfizerites?

It has to end in gang fights. I'm thinking of getting a tattoo and a leather jacket.
