It’s a distinction without a difference. The goal of vaccination is immunity. You’d tell your buddies that you got immunized by getting infected at a chickenpox party.
The practice was popular when there was no vaccine and chickenpox was regarded as relatively harmless. We now know that dormant chickenpox virus is what gives you shingles later in life.
