Maybe he was naive to assume the FBI could be trusted but they are supposed to be your counter-intelligence organisation so if they’ve been corrupted, that’s on the US.
Contacting the FBI was exactly what he was supposed to do when he was told America was being compromised by foreign intelligence. Would you expect an ally to do nothing in such a case.
