Australia is the last country I would think would go Soviet in a blink of an eye

Australia is now a satellite of North Korea. Only difference is the North Koreans have slightly more freedom.

Australia began as a penal colony
and it is now becoming one again

I think it was a French politician in a speech some years ago who spoke about how various varieties of the best French grapes have been transplanted to and are now thriving in places like California to rival those from France.
But when storms and disease have devastated the French vineyards, including those choice grapes, those varieties were restored once again from the now thriving transplants.
So, too, with ideas and principles like freedom, liberty and rational self-governance in Australia, and perhaps even America, also, when this political bight is finally over.
Sometimes the only way to realize something’s value is to lose it and then re-acquire what’s been lost … and here we are.

Tasmania was a penal colony, c1803, at which time New South Wales claimed it as part of NSW, Tasmania became independent in 1825. Australia proper was never a penal colony, although I heard the same thing all my life.

"NS Pearl Harbor?"
Huh? I'm not sure what we're talking about.

Just don’t bring them here! They’ll get comfortable and start spewing the same liberal bs that got them in trouble to begin with. Think California transplants.

I am torn up about what Australia is doing. I read the govt. was cracking down on their social media also and I've noticed that the messages have slowed down a lot. What was supposed to be our access to other people is being cut off and I have no doubt it can happen here and to some extent already has happened here.

They can’t come to the US, but they can travel to Mexico. Personal knowledge. Presumably you mean they can take a "vacation" in Cancun, as long as they buy a round trip ticket and only bring clothing and a toothbrush (and their bitcoin private keys). I wonder if the Aussie govt checks the bank accounts for very large withdrawals or checks the mail for overseas shipments before the trip?

Thank you for the gracious reply. (FR discussions are always better when no one yells at anyone else!)

Guessing they need permission to leave for an extended period of time. Surely, a two week vacation wouldn’t require much.
Hop a plane to Mexico and cross the US border. Claim you’re Hispanic or Middle Eastern. Easy peasy.

You’re a Navy Vet. I was asking if you were stationed there.

That type of thing. Business trip. Do nothing before you leave. Do it all afterwards. Convert cash to boats and sail the ocean. Seems France has been doing that.

Sorry, didn't connect NS with Naval Station. Maybe less rum in my coffee? No, never stationed there, but liberty more times than can remember from all my WesPac's out of San Diego.
Another time about the attitudes of native Hawaiians, Samoans, other Pacific islanders.
