The CDC reveals who is really getting the severe breakthrough COVID-19 cases
Deseret News ^ | September 9, 2021 | Herb Scribner

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has new data about who is suffering from severe breakthrough cases of COVID-19, and it’s inline with information we’ve read before.

How many breakthrough cases are there? The CDC said it received reports of 12,908 severe COVID-19 breakthrough cases among fully vaccinated people, which resulted in hospitalization or death, according to CNN.

In total, 173 million people in the U.S. have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19. According to CNN, these numbers suggest you have a 1 in 13,000 chance of getting a severe breakthrough cases of COVID-19 if you’re fully vaccinated.

Who is getting severe breakthrough cases?

Per CNN, the new CDC data suggests that 70% of the breakthrough cases that led to hospitalizations are among those 65 and older.

Close to 87% of those cases that resulted in death were 65 and older, too.

This seems to fit information we’ve heard before. Reports surfaced earlier in August that weaker and frail people were often infected with COVID-19 and often suffered from worse symptoms, as I wrote for the Deseret News.

What are your chances of getting COVID-19?

A new report from The New York Times suggested that the chances of fully vaccinated people getting infected by the novel coronavirus are about 1 in 5,000. That’s based on data from Utah and Virginia, as well as Washington State’s King County, which includes Seattle.

However, the chances slim to 1 in 10,000 for communities where there’s higher vaccination rates, like much of the Northeast, Chicago and Los Angeles.

“Here’s one way to think about a 1-in-10,000 daily chance: It would take more than three months for the combined risk to reach just 1%,” according to The New York Times.

"I recently read somewhere on FR that the Phizer vaccine was designed with a weaker dosage strength than the Moderna one to minimize the usual early reactions to a vaccine. If true, the maine cause of breakthrough infections would likely be the dosage strength rather than the basic vaccine technlogy."

No. The truth is far more Schadenfreudic...

"But perhaps most remarkably, BioNTech co-founder Ugur Sahin designed the vaccine in just a few hours in mid-January...A BioNTech spokesperson confirmed to Business Insider that Sahin — who founded the company with his wife, Özlem Türeci — made a "rough design over one weekend.

Moderna's vaccine also took just two days to design, as Business Insider previously reported. The reason both candidates could be designed so quickly comes down to the technology they rely on: messenger RNA, or mRNA.

Using the coronavirus' genetic sequence, which Chinese researchers published on January 11, Sahin designed 10 different candidates on his computer that weekend. One was the candidate later selected for larger trials — the one the FDA has authorized. Sahin designed that winning candidate in just a few hours, according to The Journal.

Pfizer and BioNTech announced that their vaccine was more than 90% effective on November 9. When Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla told told senior company officials of the findings, people jumped up from their chairs, The Wall Street Journal reported.

The full results of the Phase 3 trial were even stronger: The findings, published in the New England Journal of Medicine on Thursday, suggest that the vaccine doesn't trigger severe side effects in most people and is 95% effective at preventing COVID-19 [ Ed. note: LOL! ].

The speed at which BioNTech and Pizer developed the vaccine does not mean they sacrificed thoroughness, according to Albert Rizzo, chief medical officer for the American Lung Association."

Just my small circle, but 100% of those ive known getting covid since July have been vaccinated people under 40. Two people over 80 that I know recently were hospitalized for respiratory issues and it was not covid either time. The people with covid cases were somewhat sick like with any flu and never needed medical treatment. Some felt fine by day 3-4 but still stayed at home and rested for 2 weeks.

then I really don’t understand the hesitancy to get the vaccine.

I know two people in my sphere that have debilitating illness from the jab, one a 12 year boy who has severe neurological problems….his mother was a nurse who pushed the family into the toxic jabs, her regrets are unbearable….that said- I have three close friends that got the Moderna jab and caught Covid, that said- I caught Covid ( age 62) and survived the Covid FLU just fine. I thank God for the Covid flu, because I now have natural immunity, like he intended….and more important- Peace- knowing I am free from the unknown long term debilitating side effects.

And by the way, hurry out and get your boosters every six months and fully overload your body with unknown, unproven toxins.

On a roll, then you can take that revolver, load it up with two bullets ( boosters) put to your head and pull the trigger, then load it up with three bullets, repeat, your chances are not good- good luck.

“A 1-in-1000 daily chance is always a 1-in-1000 daily chance. It’s like flipping a penny. Every flip is a 50-50 chance of “heads”.

You are right that if you flip a coin once a day, your chance of getting heads on any one of those days is 50/50 or 1-in-2.

But if you flip a coin each day for ten days, your chances of getting heads on at least ONE of those days is almost 100%:

1-(1/2)^10 which equals 1023/1024

So, if you have a 1/1000 chance of getting sick on any given day, then your chances of getting sick over 90 days is 1-(1/1000)^90 an EXTREMELY high probability.

I did not stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night, so this is purely speculation, but .. in addition to healthcare and long-term care personnel, the older segment of the population were among the first to be administered the vaccines.

Since the efficacy of the vaccine diminishes over time - thus the need for boosters - it's possible that this group is now the most vulnerable for breakthrough cases since the shots they received in mid-winter/early spring have now lost their effectiveness.

What gives?

“We’re sorry, but our calculator is not valid and not accurate for someone with your characteristics.”

Is it because I am just too healthy??

I wish I had that data. “THEY” (CDC staffers et al) must have it but have chosen not to publish it. My suspicion is that it would show a disparity in efficacy over time between the vaccines.

I know of one 61-65 year old that was a JJ vaccine...the patient was getting sicker at home after being ill for a few days and came into ICU for hi flo nasal oxygen support...but got better overnight, stayed a day with consistently reducing o2 needs and was transferred out to be sent home shortly in the next day or so. The JJ vac didn’t keep the patient from completely getting sick but the patient weathered the covid much better with just steroids and support. The patient was a bit overweight but no other comorbidities. 90 percent of our icu patients with covid are unvaxxed, the rest may have been vaxxed or their status was unknown. 80 percent die.

I did read an article on lab results stating that Moderna provided much better protection than the WH favorite, Phizer (sp)

“The bi-weekly reports I receive on my phone have been indicating one or two cases of Covid among the staff and no infections in the vaccinated residents.”

Are the residents cheating by taking Ivermectin?

No, but they probably could in Florida. They got the Pfizer vaccines before others because it is a Florida state veterans home. Desantis made them a priority. We lost a few before the vaccine. The vaccine worked well for them. Infections have been almost always staff since February.
