I’m not confident in people’s ability to see that clearly. I think there’s a good chance the Dems will successfully spin this.

They spin everything and it fools many. Like Biden ended the war? HUH, I thought Trump ended it and Biden just needed to execute without screwing it up.

If the Taliban act borderline civilized and don’t commit any large scale atrocities against US nationals in the coming months, the chaos of the withdrawal will be forgotten and most people will just be glad that Biden “got us out.” This line will be an easy sell for the Democrats because a) it’s simple and b) the media will reinforce it.

That’s what they’re hoping for, I think the Taliban will be the Taliban, we just won’t hear about their atrocities.

She and Mitt Romney should run together on an independent ticket.

Maybe so, although I’m open to the possibility that Taliban 2.0 may see it as advantageous to their goals to avoid outright barbarism at least in the short term.

I can’t prove it and could easily be wrong but my gut is that this whole thing was a carefully planned operation devised by the White House and State Department with the military as a somewhat balky partner. There were direct negotiations with the Taliban and it was understood that the Afghan government would be betrayed and would collapse and that the country would be handed over to the Taliban. What we got out of the deal was assurances of a relatively unmolested withdrawal including safe withdrawal of our nationals and friendlies after the June 31 deadline. If the Taliban follows through on this then we unfreeze their assets and give them a degree of recognition. That’s the scenario I’m picturing at least.
