More evacuation orders were issued for residents in El Dorado and Alpine counties Sunday night after the massive Caldor Fire experienced a "rapid spread," Cal Fire said. For the first time, people in the Tahoe Basin and Amador County were included in those orders.
The expanded evacuation orders come as a red flag warning is set to go into effect at 11 a.m. Monday for the Northern Sierra and Southern Cascades.

I guess the ski resorts turned the snow makers machines into mist making machines and saved many buildings
Anticipate we will see smoke back in the Reno area today. I read over the weekend that the fire fighting effort was focused on protecting some homes and not on keeping the fire from progressing into the Tahoe basin. I guess those few homes saved or lost are more important than stopping the fire overall?
not much fuel is the rocky areas SW of the basin but there are some gaps in those breaks and spotting over them is possible
And looking north over the west side of Peavine Peak, there is smoke in the distance. (I live in southwest Reno with great view directly west to Verdi and California, north to Peavine Peak, and then to the western side of Reno)
For skiers to note, Sierra at Tahoe is involved and its right at Kirkwood’s doorstep.
I skied at Sierra and Kirkwood when I was a kid. Sad to see Sierra in flames.

The Caldor Fire’s mandatory evacuation area now includes almost all of the CA side of South Lake Tahoe. To give perspective on just how large the fire area is, I attached a map that stretches all the way to the Bay Area.
For those unfamiliar. Desolation Wilderness is 63,000 acres. Mostly granite. Relatively little fuel.

Spotting in the red flag conditions is a real problem. Just read on Twitter it’s starting to spot.
This guy goes into the fire alongside the ff’s and gets incredible videos. Well worth checking out. He was all over it last night.

#CaldorFire (El Dorado Co/ENF) - AA advising fire is going to impact Hwy 88 @ Martin Meadow (just north of Silver Lake) much sooner than expected & just now ground units are saying there are multiple spots across Hwy 88.
They’ve got a lot of exhausted, gutsy people fighting this. Hope they can contain it and hit spots hard.
This is a pretty pessimistic view- but maybe realistic.
CalFire Chief Thom Porter says that, for the second time in California history, a wildfire has crossed the Sierra Nevada. The first was the Dixie Fire last month, and the latest was the Caldor Fire now.
“Every canyon will burn in this state. Be ready now,” he urges.

I live in one of those canyons, and I’m scared to death. I told my husband that this is the last summer I love here. I don’t think he believes me, but I can’t live in fear like this for whatever amount of time I have left in my life.
The Ponderosa is located on the north shore so it’s safe for now.
Oh wow- I’m so sorry you’re living with such worry. I have friends out in Northern California near Chico who just love it but they’re done. If Newsom survives the recall, they’re going to leave the state.
