A COVID-19 variant first detected in South Africa could be more infectious than other mutations – and may have the potential of being resistant to vaccines, according to a report.
The C.1.2 strain has been linked to “increased transmissibility” and is said to have mutated the most from the original virus, which first emerged in the Chinese city of Wuhan, the Mirror reported.
The strain has a mutation rate of about 41.8 mutations per year, almost double the global mutation rate seen in any other existing Variant of Concern, or VOC, according to experts at South Africa’s National Institute for Communicable Diseases and the KwaZulu-Natal Research Innovation and Sequencing Platform.
The number of C.1.2 genomes in South Africa have risen from 0.2 percent in May to 1.6 percent in June and 2 percent in July, according to scientists, who also have found 14 mutations in nearly 50 percent of the variants that had a C.1.2 sequence.

I don’t get the sneering. Of course the virus will mutate. It’s not a process of life (since the virus is not alive). It’s a process of statistics.
People take a breath of the original artificially created virus particles and it floats around inside the lungs until it bumps into a lung cell, whose receptors ensnare it. Normal breathing rubs it against the cell membrane and it is pushed inside, where its RNA strand replaces the cell’s. The cell function changes to virus production, not oxygen transfer.
Since the virus particle that ensnares best gets replicated more, you soon have a new strain. Might as well label it something. Greek letters are traditional.
It doesn’t have to do anything different to have faster transmission also equal more effective killing. Speed is the issue. Not function. Get enough lung cells infected early and arrival of vax primed antibodies, or natural antibodies from prior infection, won’t matter. They take days to get produced and deployed. It can be far too late if the strain you have is faster than Delta.
It soon will be.
At this rate, you may soon get your wish. Can we start shopping which variant we want? Such BS! 99+% survivability. Higher than CONvid vax efficacy numbers.
