Solzhenitsyn was a Russian officer in ww2. He told a Stalin joke by the camp fire one night. Next thing he knows he’s in a cattle car headed far East.

Actually it was criticism of Stalin’s conduct of the war in a letter to a friend that did him in. Solzhenitsyn also got in trouble for advocating a different type of government which was a big no-no according to the Soviet criminal code.

As I recall the joke was about ‘the man with the mustache’ and that was enough to get him into the Gulag.
