Democrats last night sought to distance themselves from Joe Biden as fierce criticism of the President threatened to make him a political liability ahead of congressional elections next year.
The party controls both the Senate and House of Representatives by small margins and Republicans believe the President's handling of the chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan could help them win back power.
One Democratic insider told The Telegraph: “He was right to withdraw but the perception is he's made a serious, serious mistake. How he got himself into this mess is beyond me, and it's done some serious harm to him.”
In the key state of Pennsylvania the fact Mr Biden was born there proved a major electoral boost for Democrats in 2020. But Susan Wild, a Democrat congresswoman from Pennsylvania, strongly criticised the president.
“The evacuation process appears to have been egregiously mishandled. We need answers and accountability regarding the cascading failures that led us to this moment,” she said. “Our troops deserve nothing less than a complete and unvarnished truth.”
White House officials appeared stung by criticism from fellow Democrats. In response to Ms Wild's comments Jen Psaki, the White House spokeswoman, said: “It is easy to throw stones and be a critic from the outside. It is harder to be in the arena and make difficult decisions.” There was particular anger, including among Democrats, that the names of US citizens and Afghan allies had been given to the Taliban so they could be let past checkpoints.

May they all be swept out.
Sorry Dems, no can do. Joe has been one of you his entire life. You pushed him to be VP and then POTUS. You own him and everything he does.
Where is Ilhan Omar? She’s the one who married her brother.
Exactly.
After decades of being in politics, it is incredible that these demonkkkraps had no idea that Xiden could be this bad. They need to go down with their ship captain. He is them.
Every democrat voter owns Biden
They bear equal responsibility for every military death in Kabul
Problem with the left is even when they hit rock bottom they do not look inward.
Even now they are calculating how they can get pass this.
Blame Trump? Lay low and ride it out? Is there some way we can blame white supremacists?
Why haven't we heard much from the Arizona Audit yet ?
ESPECIALLY now that the biden administration is in SUCH jeopardy.
They need a distraction, something that makes Joe look like a patriotic hero..
Oh yes, 'Tis a puzzlement!
If recent history tells us anything it’s that they will make something up.
Perhaps another fake crisis and old joe,who can barely put on his own pants, will save the day.
The other option is to ignore any bad news like it isn’t happening or it isn’t biden’s fault.
Maybe they can blame global warming?
They knew. They just didn’t care. They are like the ignorant people who think the president of their company doesn’t do things except sign checks and play golf.
The Hurricane will save him.
My experience with Democrats is they’re too stupid to understand the damage they’ve done to this nation.
All he had to do was have confidence in the experts and their advice, follow it and a lot of this would never have happened in my estimation.
But noooo.
Does biden play golf?
Biden dont care. Elections are stolen now. The new normal.
Deep state forever and fake elections for ever... the only thing democrats have bet on for all those years.
I have no clue. I was talking about the dummies at work who think the president of their company just signs checks and plays golf. These are the ignorant people who thought it didn’t matter who was elected as long as they had a D after their name.
Turns out Biden was also involved in the epic failure that was the fall of Saigon…
[Half-century history of back-stabbing and abandoning allies]
In an article written earlier this year, long before Joe Biden allowed the Taliban to take over Afghanistan and trap our people there, it was pointed out that as a first-term Senator Biden played a part in the fall of Saigon, to which many are comparing Afghanistan.
ATLANTIC – In the spring of 1975, as North Vietnamese divisions approached Saigon, hundreds of thousands of South Vietnamese with connections to the U.S.—soldiers, officials, spies, interpreters, drivers, bar girls, cooks—begged their American friends and colleagues to help them find a way out. But the embassy in Saigon and the Ford administration in Washington were slow to face the gravity of the situation and reluctant to prepare an evacuation for fear of panicking the population into chaos. In mid-April, President Gerald Ford finally realized that the government of South Vietnam might fall, and he asked Congress for $300 million in emergency aid, including money to evacuate the remaining 2,500 Americans and their dependents along with up to 175,000 South Vietnamese.
But Congress, led by Senate Democrats, had no interest in throwing away more money on a lost war that Americans wanted to forget. The prospect of sending U.S. troops to help evacuate Vietnamese along with Americans was a nonstarter. Some of the most strenuous objections came from the 32-year-old first-term senator from Delaware, Joseph R. Biden.
