China to activate world's first 'clean' nuclear reactor in September-(liquid thorium)
https://www.msn.com ^ | 7/23/2021 | Ben Turner

The prototype molten-salt nuclear reactor, which runs on liquid thorium rather than uranium, is expected to be safer than traditional reactors because thorium cools and solidifies quickly when exposed to the air, meaning any potential leak would spill much less radiation into the surrounding environment compared with leaks from traditional reactors.

The prototype reactor is expected to be completed next month, with the first tests beginning as early as September.

As this type of reactor doesn't require water, it will be able to operate in desert regions. The location of the first commercial reactor, slated for construction by 2030, will be in the desert city of Wuwei, and the Chinese government has plans to build more across the sparsely populated deserts and plains of western China, as well as up to 30 in countries involved in China's "Belt and Road" initiative — a global investment program that will see China invest in the infrastructure of 70 countries.

How does it generate power without water?

"doesn't require water"

Do they a different way to generate electricity with out steam turbines?

This starts a chain reaction, releasing heat into the thorium-salt mixture, which is then sent through a second chamber where the excess energy is extracted and transformed into electricity.

It gets even more frustrating, at least if you’re American. According to the Telegraph, a Chinese thorium research lab, led by Jiang Mianheng, already has 140 Ph.Ds, and will have a staff of 750 by 2015. All of those folks are working on research that’s based on an American body of work that was just lying around: Link http://motherboard.vice.com/blog/china-is-taking-the-lead-on-thorium-reactor-development

I heard about this. America did all the theoretical research and engineering layouts then did nothing while feeding it all to the Chinese.

It’s like if during the industrial revolution Britain send engineers over to build our factories.

I thought this project was funded by the Gates Foundation IIRC.

BTW. There is a lot of Thorium on the Earth!
So much, that the energy stored in Thorium is larger than all fossil fuels and all Uranium together.
At this point Earth Thorium provides basically infinite source of energy! At least until the nuclear fusion reactor technology will be developed.
If we are really serious about global warming etc. Thorium is the way to go!

WE should be leading in thorium technology!

We abandoned this technology because it doesn’t have weapons application like the uranium fuel cycle does. Plus the NIMBY crowd’s gyrations about all things nuclear didn’t help. Now we’ll sit on the sidelines while true green energy is implemented by the Chinese, and will eventually buy it back from them at a greatly inflated cost.
