HBCUs clear student balances and cancel debt with federal funds

The Covid-19 pandemic has disproportionately impacted the finances of many Black Americans, including student loan borrowers. Black college graduates owe an average of $25,000 more in student loan debt than white college grads, and over 50% of Black borrowers say their net worth is less than what they owe on student loans.

Now, a number of historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) are stepping in to help alleviate that financial burden. With federal funding and private donations, these schools are wiping out current students’ account balances — including tuition and fees — and giving them a fresh start.

“We’re committing $5 million, assisting nearly 2,000 students with account balances,” said Clark Atlanta University President George T. French Jr. “The impetus, of course, was to help our students — and to make sure from a business, from a financial implication posture to make sure that we reduce our student debt, so that they could matriculate and graduate.”

Clark Atlanta University in Atlanta, Georgia, which has nearly 4,000 students in total, was one of the first HBCUs in the nation to use federal pandemic relief aid to clear balances for some of its students.

The school is not only cancelling outstanding tuition balances. Also, starting with the 2020 spring term through the current semester, “if you have a dining or a residence hall balance, it will cover that,” French said. “So whatever balances that you have that would restrict you from coming to school, we are removing those restrictions.”

“We are reinventing the college experience,” he said, “so that our students can graduate nearly debt free.”

What they are reinventing is a bunch of entitled parasites that expect to be given anything and everything they want because they are a special class.

No you're not. The supremacy-toxic, privileged taxpayers are.

I see that neither NBC and the originating source of the article, CNBC, have comments enabled. I wonder why that might be.

I don’t like the idea of federal or state tax payer money going to do this unless across the board with all students. I am happy to see that there might be private donors and school funds to do this. It should be an effort of all schools to solve this without taxpayer money.

What type of response is that? They couldn’t get into regular schools? Many of these colleges have been around for 100 years!

In case you forgot, those Federal Funds sent to them were a highlight of DJT’s outreach to the Black community. He bragged about that money. Many of these colleges charged far less than their non-HBCU colleagues and their endowments were lacking.

Go back and read up on who graduated from these schools, they didn;t turn out too many ‘professional Negro’ grads.

Gee, I never owed anything when I went to school but if I did given my net worth at that time I would have owed more than I was worth if I owed more than a few hundred dollars.
Yes I worked in school. Yes I did not go to a school I could not afford (Rochester Institute). Yes I chose a major that would lead to a career, after Army. Yes I commuted to school. Worked for me. Maybe some of our woke, diverse, POC, and party leeches could follow that example.

Reaching out to black people is a waste of time.
Identity politics is for Democrats, and a losing issue for Republicans.
You’ll piss off more whites than blacks gained.
I thought we had principles, not pandering to races.

So can we consider this reparations and be done with it?

RIT is a quality school.
Only problem is it’s in Rochester... :)

#2: "Maybe they went to black schools because they couldn’t get into normal schools. Maybe they owe more because they didn’t work during college, and being a professional negro isn’t a job skill set."

The graduation rate of these black schools is abysmal. And nobody is hiring professional negroes, which is the only occupation these schools train them for.

Take it up with DJT, not me.

Your comments about a real college are beyond contemptable.

If you went to University, you would know Wikipedia is not a useable reference.
DJT made numerous mistakes. Personnel choices and pandering to minorities are two.
Enjoy your pandering to blacks day.

“Now, a number of historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) are stepping in to help alleviate that financial burden. With federal funding...”

The headline makes it sound like black colleges are footing the bill when in reality it’s THE REST OF US!

More white privilege.

When I think of HBCU’s, I think of Howard University and the reaction of their students when they found OJ, not guilty.
