WASHINGTON — Since the Taliban seized the Afghan capital on Aug. 14, more than 82,000 people have been evacuated from Afghanistan in one of the largest U.S. airlifts in history.
Here’s a look at where the situation stands:
HOW DID WE GET HERE?
President Donald Trump signed a peace deal with the Taliban in February 2020 as part of an effort to end what he called the “endless wars” in the Middle East. He agreed to a May 1 deadline to have all troops out of the country. Biden, who says he no longer wants to risk American lives in a civil war among Afghans, kept with the withdrawal plan but extended the deadline to September. The Taliban quickly seized control of most of the country as the U.S. withdrew air support to the Afghan military.
WHO IS GETTING FLOWN OUT OF THE COUNTRY?
The 70,000 evacuees include more than 4,000 American citizens and family members.
SHOULDN’T THIS PROCESS HAVE STARTED EARLIER?
Members of Congress and others have long complained about the length of time and the bureaucratic hurdles required for former interpreters and others who worked for the U.S. to get visas. The process slowed further under Trump, whose administration also cut the number of refugees allowed into the U.S., and it came to a virtual halt with the outbreak of COVID-19.

It took them all week to come up with this spin.
Trump’s fault, it’s a good thing Biden came to the rescue./S
Biden, who says he no longer wants to risk American lives in a civil war among Afghans, kept with the withdrawal plan but extended the deadline to September [in order to conduct the withdrawal in the middle of Afghanistan's "Fighting Season"]."
fixed it.
Amazing how many facts "fall out of" the propaganda from the Ape Pee...
Is this number anything more than something pulled out of AP's keister?!?
Well I, for one, feel comforted by it.
The biggest problem we face as a country is the long lag between unfortunate event and spin.
First of all Trumps plan called for Civilians to be removed first and then the soldiers. Biden, the fool did it bass ackward.
Second not a single American life was lost in Afghanistan in the past 18 months while Trump was president.
The LAAP-dog AP left out an important fact.
Biden refused to let the military have enough troops to protect Bagram Air Force Base AND the US embassy, so the military was forced to abandon the base. They counted on a functioning Kabul International Airport with unfettered access.
Biden gave up the one thing that was protecting everything else, and the whole operation came crashing down.

I don’t believe I’ve read a more disgusting and dishonest spin than this one. It’s all Trump’s fault. Biden had the awesome power of the presidency for more than six months. Yet it’s all Trump’s fault.
I wonder if the AP blamed Pearl Harbor on Herbert Hoover. After all, Hoover was a Republican. So Pearl Harbor had to be his fault.
“AP Explainer”. LOL!
Out of 70,000 evacuees only 4,000 are americans?
It’s amazing the first line in the article is President Donald Trump…he isn’t the President anymore! My goodness it’s like trying to put Flex seal on the the titanic
“By BEN FOX and JAMIE STENGLE, who are known merchants of disinformation, who suck Soros’ schwantz.
I flew into and out of Afghanistan on C17s several times.
I would say that they hold 300-400 people max in regular seating.
So, to get 20k people out in one day would require at LEAST 50 flights.
No way.
And wasn’t there a story the other day that a flight of a dozen or so C17s went thru Kabul. The first had about 300 passengers, and the rest only had about 100 each.
So 20K passengers in a day? BS!
If you’ve been listening to Glen Beck, you know that the State Department has been slow walking the paperwork to allow people to leave. So painfully few have made it out on the private planes.
