Islam was headed toward the dustbin of history (or morphing into some nohostile modern version.). Carter by allowing radical Islam (Shia version) to suceed. He emboldened radical Sunni versions. Anyone who doesn’t believe that the Carter era was a turning point can go look on the Internet and find !960s sylish dress of young men & women in Iran & Kabul. If you want to trace the change also look for class pictures of American Universoti Cairo & Beirut). Particularly look at the young women they went from stylish European fashions (worn somewhat modestly!) to class pictures of laundry bags with eyeslits. You can almost track the changes by year.

And its true it wasn’t only Carter, European cowardice played a big role too!

I was in 4th grade in 1976-77 (I turned 55 last month), President Carter just started his term. I used to read "Highlights Magazine" as a kid and my teacher would have us watch "Big Blue Marble" on PBS. I remember seeing an article in Highlights as well as an episode of Big Blue Marble about life in Iran from a perspective of a 10 to 13 year old girl. The girl had the latest jeans, played the latest records from Elton John, Bee Gees, Paul McCartney and Wings, etc., and she goes out with her friends to the mall or to eat. A year later, the Ayatolla shows up like a bad penny and changed everything. I was 11 or 12 and even then I asked the question, "why didn't the CIA, SAS, MI6, The Mob, whomever stake out this guy? He's really bad news." Maybe the Shah wasn't always a nice guy but he did bring Iran into the 20th Century.
