If you want to understand the horrifying return to power of the Taliban in Afghanistan, you could delve into the history of a mountain nation that repeatedly repels foreign invaders.
Or you could consider the saga of nine Italian goats.
These animals from Tuscany were airlifted into the country as part of a £4.4 million scheme planned by the Pentagon to help the Afghan cashmere industry and create thousands of jobs.

“ Those in charge could not even tell if the unfortunate goats ended up in a cooking pot. ‘We don’t know,’ said John Sopko, the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction. ‘This was so poorly managed.’”
I could say so much.
Some nations will never be made civilized.
9 Goats? 4.4 million pounds? Dumping all my cattle tomorrow and taking up goats.
Man the stupid is into every corner of .gov.
I would bet that the goats were used for something other than cashmere.
And a fantastic guitar player, from what I’ve read
Expensive sex toys.
Sad but true!!
Post of the thread.
Got news for the news folks. Those goats weren’t for their wool!!! And the camels were glad to see them.
20 years of feeding these pigs in government not including money laundering foreign aid, global warming, green new deal, solar energy, democratic bills passed with gifts for all especially the new infrastructure bill. When do we take our country back
A whole lot of people need to do a whole lot of time in prison over the entire Afghanistan debacle.

I recall reading a Fatwa issued by a respected Imam stating it was okay, as long as you or your family didn’t eat the animal, but sold it (presumably without telling the buyer).
A truly enlightened people...
“A truly enlightened people...”
Dont get too smug, my friend. As far as corruption and perversion are concerned, we are not as different from the Afghans as perhaps you may prefer to think.
You may be right.
It’s just hard for me to process yet the apparent level of ignorance, hubris and negligence by the DOD, DOS and four administrations.
I never wanted to believe it had gotten that bad.
It was all money seeking a place to land.
Not good ideas seeking money.
And for the bleeding hearts who are in favor of bringing Afghan "military vets" into the country, remember that there are officially 300,000 Afghan soldiers on the payroll and about 75,000 actually serving.
The other 225,000 are phantom soldiers who are getting paid but do not exist. At the end, the Army collapsed due to stoppage of the soldiers pay.
You can bet that the 225,000 phantom soldiers were getting paid long after then 75,000 actually fighting in the field were cut off from pay and support.
Perhaps things would have been much different in Afghanistan if the 100+ Billion we squandered on a non existent army actually went to fighting the Taliban. <.p>
I suspect that much of the stolen money that went to the phantom army actually went to the Taliban itself and was spent on killing Americans.
If we have an Afghan Special Forces door kicker or translator and his family who actual American soldiers will vouch for - let them into the US.
Everyone else is just a likely to fraudster or Taliban plant who has been fraudulently receiving US dollars as a phantom soldier with Swiss or UAE bank account. We need some serious vetting and investigating exactly who we are letting into the country
