Yup - we knew that in Feb of 2020. 95% of those that went on Vents died within 30 days.
That was then...it’s 80 percent now. Still really bad but a little better. Promising candidates at our hospital get put on ecmo but it is a very tasky abd resource draining process. Many more could benefit but our hospital can only handle about 2 covids at a time on ecmo without taking away resources from our cardiac units that also have patients on ecmo including trauma patients. On ecmo it’s 50 50 that we get them past post vent and ecmo stage but the patients are still damaged and may take months to reach a stable recovery...which is to say lingering side effects and shortened life span with reduced quality of life due to other causes.
