Substantial losses of private and public timberlands have released decades of sequestered carbon, releasing it into the atmosphere with uncalculatable impacts to greenhouse gas accumulations.
Yup, we're doomed.
Prayers up for the folks fighting this thing and the many other fires cranking up. And for the folks that have lost everything or may lose it all.
Now, if anyone thinks that is bad? The one in Siberia is bigger than all the others put together worldwide.
AND, that one will release carbon for decades. The permafrost will thaw and refreeze till trees grow and shade it.
But, the fire bugs on this site will still say that fire is the best way to manage a forest.
Isn’t the fire for which an arsonist has been arrested - a professes??
Not for the Dixie (yet!?) but some others nearby.
No, it was PGE again. The professor was setting fire near it. Maybe impromptu backfiring, which is incredibly stupid
One thing that is a big puzzle to me — why haven’t fire-fighting resources increased TEN TIMES in the past few years? Ten times more engines; ten times more planes; ten times more helicopters; ten times more men; ten times more bulldozers; etc. The tendency toward drought, forest mismanagement, huge fuel load growth, lack of clearing undergrowth, etc is no mystery and easy to plan for.
Its almost as if somebody wants the western USA wiped out.
There was a plane modified, a DC-9 IIRC, which could have delivered huge amounts of fire suppression material but, again, IIRC, was never approved for use. Guess somebody’s brother in law wasn’t gonna make a bundle. Over 5,000 folks working the Dixie.
