At first Alzheimer’s patients want to go home then, if they get there, they never want to leave. At some point, if they can’t be cared for at home anymore and are moved to a care facility, my Momma seemed to forget about home and never said another word about it. The saddest things in my life and I struggle to keep them tamped down; how she forgot her husband, home, children but never he parents or her siblings, all 11 of them or her life as a teacher or the words to hymns or God.
I have seen all these stages, five of them, in painful detail. Plugs is gone, he is past the stage of taking the keys away from him. He is at that stage were people, catching glimpses of cognition, think they can reason with him and don’t know they are trying to reason with a three year-old going on two. It is impossible, frustrating and they will suck you into their downward vortex leaving you frustrated, angry, fearful and seem to drive you insane if you can’t get away from it.
I do not feel any empathy for plugs. He has always been a foul, dirty old man with no endearing qualities at all. He should have never been allowed to run for office and now he is killing us with him.
Oh my goodness. You described exactly what I went through with my Mother. She forgot my Daddy, my sister and her grandchildren. She did know me and my husband but she saw us frequently. We had to remove her from her home also. It was quick and swift. Broke my heart but I had to do it. She never went back. She died 5 years ago. Bess her heart she was ready to go.
