Virginia, Maryland - Tourism Info Needed
MplsSteve

Posted on 08/18/2021 9:05:47 PM PDT by MplsSteve

The Wife and I are gonna be in northern Virginia and western Maryland for about a week and a half in mid-September.

Because of my love of the Civil War, we are gonna visit Monocacy, Gettysburg, Winchester in the Shenandoah Valley and likely Harpers Ferry. We may or may not hit Antietam. I've already seen it once before.

The Wife is surprisingly supportive of visiting these battlefields but I also am gonna throw in a winery visit and possibly head up to Hershey Pa.

I need some advice from people familiar with the areas I've described. AFAIK, we're gonna use Frederick Maryland as a central base from which to visit places in the area.

I'm looking for any suggestions regarding decent hotels/motels, places to eat, things to see, etc. I'm also looking for info about places to avoid - crime, etc.

Thank you in advance for reading this and I look foward to your suggestions and recommendations.

See the nation while it exists.

If it fits into your agenda, a visit to the museum and battle field at New Market, VA would be a worthwhile addition. This is the battle in which the cadets from VMI participated.

Spend a few days in Charlottesville area. If you like history, this area is Disneyland. Monticello and James Madison’s Montpelier (not to be missed) are close by, as well as Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, the Wilderness, Appomattox. 50 wineries within 25 miles, including Trump Winery. Spectacular scenery, one great restaurant after the other. Have fun!

Keep all radar detectors out of your vehicle. If you get pulled over and they see one you will get a ticket.

Radar detectors are illegal in Virginia but not Maryland.

Agree with Laslo Fripp -- Mount Vernon is an excellent place. Its Visitors Center is very interesting, as are the tours of the house and all the farm outbuildings where Washington ran his export business. Until Trump, Washington was the richest President (in comparable dollars) from his enterprises.

Also wonderful and not far away is James Madison's recently refurbished estate, Montpelier. You can see the room where he wrote the Constitution, and the wonderful rolling hills descending into the distance from that upstairs room.

Farther south near Charlottesville is Jefferson's Monticello estate. Fascinating look at his ingeniousness as expressed in the home he designed and many of his instruments in his office, such as a copying device that enabled a penman to write on two pieces of paper at once.

Prepare yourself for the inevitable preaching about slavery; but it's still worth a look at these Founders' homes. Check the above websites for any fascistmask or fascistvax requirements.

ARE YOU CALLING ME A LIAR! Are YOU talking about TODAY or when I was there over twenty years ago? I was there! I know what I saw. I took photographs. YOU call me a liar! I call YOU a liar! I’m telling the truth and know it! I’m immune from liars. Lie to somebody else, it doesn’t work with me!

WHAT CONFEDERACY MONUMENTS? I spent two day looking for them. Now! I know you that you are either lying about such monuments being there years ago... or you’re pretending (aka “lying”) that the’ve always been there. What YOU say is there was NOT there when I was there! That is fact! OK! It’s been turned into some tourist money making venture that tries to appeal to the most wallets. I get it. BUT! I KNOW WHEN I’M BEING LIED TO... I have had PLENTY of experience at it.

“ARE YOU CALLING ME A LIAR”

No. You are ignorant. I live in Maryland and have been there probably 15 times.

Try Google. There are plenty of Confederate Monuments.

Dumbslit.

Memorials for every state and also other CSA brigades that fought.

and Maryland honors both Union and CSA since it had both as a border state.
