HALIFAX -- Nova Scotia's Progressive Conservatives surged to an upset election win Tuesday over the governing Liberals after capitalizing on their main opponent's early stumbles and promising a big-spending fix to the troubled health system.

“Progressive Conservatives” - an oxymoron?
exactly
“Progressive Conservatives”, I kinda like that. In the United States the liberals took the word “progressive” and arrogantly applied it to themselves.
So it’s nice to see the word being taken back.
It used to be the name of the national party but changed to simply Conservative a couple of elections ago. The provincial party counterparts out of inertia have kept the older version.
These same statists perverted the word liberal. Liberal should be taken back to its 19th century meaning.
FYI...“Progressivism” is just another brand name for communism.
Progressive Conservatives. This brings to mine the term “Compassionate Conservative” used by Geo W Bush when he ran in 2000. I always objected to the term because it insinuated that absent GWB, Conservatives were not compassionate.

That’s true, but only because the Left hijacked the word.
Anyway, I just wish more folks knew what you just said there (Freepers know, but the average voter does not). A “progressive” Democrat is not an old-school JFK Democrat. He might pretend to be, but he’s not. He’s a socialist yearning for communism.
The Progressive Conservative name goes back from many years ago (believe in the 1940s) when the Conservatives merged with the Progressive Party and kept that name. When the federal Progressive Conservatives merged with the Canadian Alliance party in the early 2000s, the “Progressive” part of the name was dropped and thus has been known just as the Conservative Party.
In my lifetime that's always been true. I'm coming up on 59.
It reminds me of when I was living in Japan and the Japanese Communist Party was campaigning against the majority government’s tax hike.
Can we agree there is nothing truly progressive about communism? Or liberal for that matter.
It’s Canada... the best you can expect... except for their BEER!
progressive noun
Definition of progressive (Entry 2 of 2)
1a: one that is progressive
b: one believing in moderate political change and especially social improvement by governmental action
2capitalized : a member of any of various U.S. political parties: such as
a: a member of a predominantly agrarian minor party that around 1912 split off from the Republicans specifically : BULL MOOSE
b: a follower of Robert M. La Follette in the presidential campaign of 1924
c: a follower of Henry A. Wallace in the presidential campaign of 1948
1b certainly describes the incremental (until the Obama Administration) push towards progressivism by the entire Democrat party.
In modern terms how is progressivism not associated with communism? It is an incremental, stair-step approach to achieve that goal.
My opinion, of course.
If you're seeking to take back the word progressive from the democrat communist party in this country, you've a long, uphill battle on that front.
Not battling the current way of the word is used out there , just figuring things out for myself and maybe here on this website.
59?
That’s a young pup in my world...
So they ran to the LEFT of the left to win. What did the RIGHT win ?
Trudeau called a Federal Election for September is he starting to worry ?
