Last summer, Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser played a high-profile role in the protests sweeping America over police killings of Black suspects. She renamed a street Black Lives Matter Plaza and joined thousands of demonstrators there, many shouting what had become the movement’s slogan: “Defund the police!”
Earlier this year, the mayor, a Democrat, proposed cutting the police budget and redirecting money to social services.
Now, however, Bowser and many other Democratic city leaders are scrambling to boost police budgets and hire more officers amid the deadliest crime wave in two decades. Local and national Democrats are distancing themselves from “defund” politics and policies, a reflection of how deeply unpopular the concept has become among most voters - and how effective a weapon it can be for Republican candidates.

The Dims and the media (sorry for being redundant) tried that a month or so back, and it backfired big time. They're on tape all over the place calling for defunding the police, and they know they own it. You're right, though, they'll try it again.

They think that policing is something that they can turn on and off at the flip of a switch. They have zero understanding of their actions on demoralizing the nation’s police departments and how hard it now is to recruit and train good people.
There is no way in hell smart people would take that job given how whipsawed and political police forces are these days. One day you are desperately needed and a hero; the next day you are trash to be discarded and everybody’s favorite whipping boy.
One this story the Dems have no win open to them.
1) stay with defund the police, anti-cop rhetoric, no regrets for police being ambushed and killed, trying for social workers instead of cops, saying riots and looting are part of informal reparations due to white racism taking away all hope of a good life for persons of color.
That is a real loser with most people (I hope!!).
2) Retreat and act like us, praising police, wanting law enforced against shoplifting mobs and looters as well as organizers of riots and cop killings.
BUT that enrages the Squad, especially the powerful AOC, and the black Dem voting supporters (although not middle class honest black people who are the majority).
3) Allow the status quo of increasingly wild killings in cities and murders of police, blaming it on the “gun violence”, thus calling for stricter gun control——which minority and white voters do not approve of. Two recent muggings of people included killing their dog——a real loser in the Dem popularity scene. People also don’t like “4 year old girl killed and 8 year old brother clings to life in freeway shooting in road rage in Detroit.” Last month.
Which is exactly the intention behind "Defund the Police". It is really "purge and replace" the police.
The Democrats want obedient thugs who will enforce their orders. They don't really care about crime as long as the predators are far enough away from them.
Yet all those pathologies have continued for decades and have gotten progressively worse. When we get good law and order government in cities, life is much better, cities are cleaner and far safer, businesses prosper.
Yet those people who end “stop and frisk” and don’t believe in the “broken windows” theory get the upper hand and end all the good, tough police work. Things turn to crap again. People forget the lessons of 20 or 30 years earlier, cry “Yeah, defund the police” and continue to vote Dem.
I’m always amazed at the cycles that society goes through. People never learn or believe the lessons from history unless they live through it themselves.
It’s more about the liberal revolving door justice system.
No, they have redefined the term “Police”. They destroyed the normal police and now they want to fund a new woke version that is tuned to their needs.
