Three Killed in Kabul Airport as Afghans Scramble to Escape Taliban
Wall Street Journal ^ | Aug 16, 2021

At least three people were killed by gunfire Monday morning in chaotic scenes at the passenger terminal of Kabul’s international airport, where thousands of Afghans who fear for their lives after the Taliban takeover of the country converged in hopes of getting on an evacuation flight as the insurgents consolidate their control over the capital.

Witnesses reported seeing the prone, bloodied bodies lying on the ground just outside the terminal building.

The U.S. military took over security of the airport to facilitate a massive airlift of foreign diplomats and citizens after the Afghan government collapsed on Sunday. Those evacuation flights are processed on a separate military side of the airport.

Officials at the U.S. Central Command weren’t immediately available for comment...

I wonder why the UN isn't there, 'peace keeping'?

This is, perhaps, one of the saddest images I've seen from #Afghanistan. A people who are desperate and abandoned. No aid agencies, no UN, no government. Nothing.

There is no way to continue flight operations on an airport swarming with thousands of panicked civilians.

There will have to be a significant force of soldiers to drive these civilians off the active runways and taxiways and force them into a holding area.

I personally don’t think the thousands of Americans apparently still in Kabul can get out alive.

It would take a massive re-invasion force to not only clear the airport but drive the Taliban far away from the airport.

We already have 6,000 troops deployed there which is not nearly enough to fight the Taliban reported to have 60,000 fighters.

I don’t see how we can even evacuate our existing 6,000 troops without them being slaughtered as they are surrounded.

This fiasco is only going to get worse and reach biblical proportions.

Yes. Sadly he was thrown out of office after four years of non-stop venom thrown his way by an out-of-control communist insurgency in our own country.

Google Arclight ;-)

It would clear out the riff-raff. Lot of FOD to deal with though.

And NO WOMEN! These are all fighting-age men leaving women, children, and the elderly behind to be ravaged and savaged by the Taliban!

Do not forget this scene! It’s ridiculous to think these people have the same morals, beliefs, desires, or dreams as us!

Sorry, but that is the plain and simple TRUTH!

Why on earth did the US abandon Bagram AFB six weeks ago when there were still thousands of Americans on the ground? You would thank that would be the LAST place to relinquish.

Evacuating the military before the civilians made zero sense. As did abandoning Bagram. Massively bad planning, an epic blunder.

As far Kabul Airport goes, we have thousands of troops there. They need to clear the tarmac and if that means bashing heads, well it is sad but necessary. Got to stop acting like the Portland or Seattle PD. We should not have foreign civilians crawling all over our aircraft. We have paratroopers and Marines there - the brass needs to let them loose. Clear the tarmac and terminals.

This is one of the key questions. I sincerely doubt that abandoning Bagram Air Base in the middle of the night without officially handing it over to the Afghan military was in the plans for the conditioned evacuation that Trump had agreed to. Unless there’s hard evidence otherwise, why isn’t every Republican senator and congressman going before the cameras in outrage over abandoning Bagram before evacuating all Americans and Afghans who helped us?

Instead Republicans have probably gone on vacation and are just ignoring what is happening. They are allowing the media to claim that Biden is just doing what Trump planned.

A second huge difference is that Trump planned to be out by May 1. The Taliban sink back into Pakistan for most of the winter and early spring when the beginnings of the transition would’ve been happening under Trump’s plan. Summer is the Taliban‘s fighting and organizational time. Thus changing the withdrawal date to late summer just gave the Taliban time to organize and be ready to take over without any conditions.

“..Why on earth did the US abandon Bagram AFB six weeks ago..”

and left in the middle of the night. Afghan forces were not told. They awoke in the AM and the place was deserted. Cowardliness!

There were women running through the parking lot but I hadn’t noticed that it’s young men on the ladder.

WHen I heard Biden Admin plans to relocate 30K Afghanis in the US almost immediately, I thought of ‘fighting-age men’. This would be Biden’s chance to get an army of his own to help ‘put down’ protests.

Wonder if anybody stopped to think that the Marines could get stranded there. Could the Taliban decide to take on the Marines with their grossly superior numbers? I would bet everything I have there is no back up plan. You can’t land planes on a runway full of vehicles or people. This has the potential to get very bad. I just can’t seem to muster any sympathy at all for Afghans. They had their chance and they threw it away.
