Afghanistan was never salvageable. Whatever one thinks of the Afghan culture, the only thing we could have done was build a proverbial wall around the country and develop around them, with the sure promise of retribution if their culture spilled out into neighbouring countries.
Afghanistan should have been broken up like Yugoslavia was. It’s not a real country.
