I'm surprised it doesn't happen more often as those are the welds holding the ship together.

she was a wood chip carrier. Hachinohe has a few paper mills (I used to sell wood pulp to them). I wonder how she strayed out of the channel and onto a reef?

It has happened a number of times in the past. There are videos on YouTube where you can see it happening.

The scariest account I’ve ever read was when a Great Lakes Freighter broke in two on Lake Michigan in November 1956 or thereabouts. One of the big 726’ ones, I think.

The remaining survivor who was on wreckage or a raft, saw another vessel bearing down on him in the darkness right after the breakup. Turns out it was the stern section of the ship, still under power.

Scariest freighter story ever, and there are many.

Running aground tends to do that to even the best made steel.

Tow the two pieces to Shore.

What’s the problem, they don’t have any Ocean going Tugs?
My Father served on one during WWII in the South Pacific.

They pulled disabled Landing Craft off the Beaches while under Enemy Fire during the Island hopping Invasions.
