Cyber hackers returned nearly half of the $600 million they stole from DeFi platform Poly Network, in what is considered one of the biggest cryptocurrency heists in history.

Around $260 million has been returned as of Wednesday noon, Poly Network said in a tweet.

Of the funds given back, $3.3 million were in ethereum, $256 million in Binance smart chain, and $1 million in polygon, according to the post.

The return of funds follows pleas from Poly Network on Tuesday, asking the hackers for the money back and urging cryptocurrency exchanges and miners to halt tokens from the hacker's wallets....

...The hackers said they stole the funds "for fun :)" because "cross-chain hacking is hot,"...

according to this follow on story, the hacker identified himself:

“The Hacker: At the time of writing, blockchain security firm Slowmist said it had tracked down the attackers’ identity, email address, IP address, and fingerprints.

“According to Slowmist, the attackers’ funds were funded by trading the privacy coin Monero (CRYPTO: XMR) for Binance Coin (CRYPTO: BNB), Ethereum, Polygon, and other tokens.

“The hacker later sent a transaction with some amount of the stolen funds and a message, ““IT WOULD HAVE BEEN A BILLION HACK IF I HAD MOVED REMAINING SHITCOINS! DID I JUST SAVE THE PROJECT? NOT SO INTERESTED IN MONEY.”

“He added that was “considering returning some tokens or “just leave them here.”

Yeah, $300 million ain’t bad. I can not be convinced they don’t know the identity of these hackers. I am near certain they are state sponsored. China, Norks, or possibly the Ruskies.

Never keep your crypto on an exchange or defi platform....”not your private keys, not your crypto”.

Un-hackable if your 24 word seed phrase is in your safe or SD box.

Many politicians are trying to kill crypto. There's a difference between digital currency and crypto currency. If you don't want your crypto stolen, download it into a cold storage device. If you don't want your digital currency stolen, keep your dollars in a safe.
