Armed RAF fighter jets successfully intercepted a pair of Russian military aircraft after scrambling earlier today.
The pair of RAF Typhoons, which left RAF Lossiemouth in Moray, north east Scotland, early Friday afternoon, intercepted two Cold War-era TU-142 'Bear-F' Russian maritime reconnaissance and anti-submarine warfare aircraft.
Quickly racing to speeds of 985 kilometers per hour, the Quick Reaction Alert Typhoon were joined by an RAF Voyager to provide air-to-air refuelling.
They were tracked by Nato as they transited within the military alliance's northern air policing area over the North Sea, near UK airspace.
The Typhoons shadowed the aircraft throughout their journey as they approached UK airspace.

Big deal.
Happens all the time. Why is this news?
Punk Putin is pushing it.
Dancing in the moonlight.
There’s a song about that.
5.56mm
Occasionally but not all the time.
Why is this news?
Context of increased tensions recently.
Just another Bear hunt.
I’ve seen a Russian Bear no more than 100ft off the starboard wingtip.
They are good, long range airplanes.
Almost exclusively they carry electronics.
We were transiting from Hickam AFB in Hawaii on a TACAMO EC-130Q, headed to Misawa AFB Japan...ahem...for steak and lobster...
Misawa had the best steak and lobster deal in the whole Pacific theater but that’s another story. Those that know can testify.
The Bear pulled alongside and cruised with us at 26,000ft for about an hour. They are big birds.
The skipper gave us permission to remove the portal covers and moon them.
They mooned us back.
Circa 79-80.
If y'all have nothing constructive to add, at take your meds on time.
“Not impressed at all, let me tell you. All day even gotta tag team like squealing pigs “not news! happens every day! not news! happens every day! Since 1846!” and then then the meat eater stuff. Infantile.”
I’m sure you know what you said.
But to everyone else, not so much.
I for one am glad they were armed jets. Unarmed jets just weren’t up to making the same impression.
:)
Wow!! Get yourself a cheeseburger, it might calm ya down!
I joined the US Navy in 1988 as a Cryptologic Technician, Technical, learning Morse Code, then moving on to radar signatures. We trained to intercept IL-38 May, and TU-142 Bear aircraft radar, as well as LOTS of different surface contacts. I can’t believe those things are still flying, because they were old back then.
