I believe that is entirely true. Among several genetic alterations, the virus has enhanced capability to mutate. This is in addition to its robust defenses against the body’s normal immunosuppressive capabilities. By all accounts, the main feature of the Delta variant is its highly enhanced transmissibility (or as we used to say communicability).
Think about this also: in battlefield tactics, an injured enemy soldier is more useful than a dead one. The injured soldier requires other soldiers and transport vehicles to expose themselves to enemy fire and expensive resources to treat. A bio-weapon can be designed for the same purpose: there is more strategic values in draining the economic and health resources of an opponent, than the cost of body bags and funerals (sorry to be so blunt). That isn’t to say that a high mortality rate isn’t also desirable to the bio-weapons engineer, but only up to a point.
Wherever the truth ultimately lies, this virus walks like a bio-weapon, acts like a bio-weapon....
