What happened to the beta and gamma variants? Did they just skip right past them right to the delta? Personally I think a gamma variant would sound scarier.

C.37 - Peru (Lambda): This variant was first detected in Peru in December 2020 and spread throughout South America (WHO) says that the lambda variant has been the COVID carrier in about 81% of infections in Peru since April. - seven unique spike protein mutations including a mutation called L452Q, which is similar to the L452R mutation seen in the Delta and Epsilon variants. The spike protein of the lambda variant presented increased infectivity when compared with the spike protein of the Alpha and Gamma variants, both of them with reported increased infectivity and transmissibility. Lambda’s L452Q mutation might also help it spread far and wide. Lambda’s unique spike mutations could help it slip past the body’s immune increased infectivity and immune escape from neutralizing antibodies elicited by (chinese) CoronaVac - F490S, F490S, L452Q

These spikes help the virus enter the body’s cells; notably, mRNA vaccines like those manufactured by Pfizer and Moderna mimic those proteins in training the body to defeat the virus, which makes a mutation in the spike protein particularly worrisome.
The authors claim that the mutations to the spike protein have made it more infectious, adding that another mutation called RSYLTPGD246-253N helps the virus avoid destruction at the hands of antibodies (which the immune system uses to neutralize pathogens). They also write that this mutation “is responsible for the virological phenotype of the Lambda variant that can associate with the massive infection spread mainly in South American countries.” Two other spike protein mutations, 260 L452Q and F490S, also help the virus become more resistant to antibodies that are induced through vaccination.
