Texas Gov. Greg Abbott ordered a third attempt at passing a GOP voting bill on Thursday, calling another special legislative session to begin this weekend as Democrats who left the state weeks ago in protest still remain in Washington.

The announcement was expected and comes as more than 50 Democrats — who scrambled to fly out of Texas on July 12 — were on the cusp of running out the clock on the current special session and torpedoing the sweeping voting package for a second time since May.

“I will continue to call special session after special session," Abbott said.

Wrong. Several of them are now in Portugel on vacation.

Keep spreading discouraging messages like that, even to your conservative friends (if you have any). You'll then be able to claim you helped Texas elect a Democrat governor.

There ought to be a way for the governor to call it a dereliction of duty by those run-away legislators. They have, in effect, decided to forsake their jobs. Most employers would consider long-absent employees as ‘former employees’ and move on. They are, in effect, leaving their jobs.

There is more than one way-I’ve read that there are several legal maneuvers available after the passage of a certain amount of time-that required time is not up, but when it is, the AG is probably the one who will make the whip come down-should be interesting to see-if I were king, I’d negate their status as Texas citizens-so not eligible to hold public office or be in the state for anything but a visit of a few months, like the snowbirds that come here to spend the Winter...

just modify the definition of quorum to be the majority of those present.

nany places have this so this exact thing can’t stall government

or declare the seats vacated as these people have fled doing their appointed jobs representing peoples, and then get a quorum by those present

and then call special elections for all the vacated seats

They should modify it to a quorum of legislators in the state. And of course, if need be, they could ARREST someone in the state who was holding out....

IIRC, it's two of them. Lesbians. Enjoying a 'romantic getaway'.

No voting machine used in any election should use proprietary software. This must be made law.

Voting machine software must be open-source capable of being examined before the election, monitored during the election, and examined after the election.

The software must register ONE MAN ONE VOTE. No fractional or weighted counting.

No voting machine should be hardwired or wifi-enabled to connect to any outside system.

Adjudication must be done with poll watchers of both parties pesent and not an unmonitored lone individual in a back room after hours.

Proprietary voting machine software amounts to a secret, unmonitored tally of votes by an unaccountable third party.

Until we use open-source software that can be examined by qualified inspectors the result of every election remain suspect.

Their constituents should initiate recall elections, like in California.

That would bring them home.

““I will continue to call special session after special session,” Abbott said.

That’s like saying “Stop! Or I’ll say stop again. Worthless. Senate Democrats said they flew to Washington to put pressure on Congress to pass elections legislation to protect voting rights. Federal protection is not possible.

However, I believe they have violated their oath of office:

Oath of Office

The constitutional oath of office taken by the members-elect is as follows:

I, (name), do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the duties of the office of a member of the House of Representatives of the XXnd Legislature of the State of Texas, and will to the best of my ability preserve, protect and defend the Constitution and laws of the United States and of this state, so help me God.

https://hro.house.texas.gov/pdf/fr2011/110111a.PDF

“The house of representatives, together with the state senate, constitute the Texas Legislature. The duties of the legislature include consideration of proposed laws and resolutions, consideration of proposed constitutional amendments for submission to the voters, and appropriation of all funds for the operation of state government.”

https://house.texas.gov/resources/frequently-asked-questions/

Some Democrats hope their absence will give them leverage to force good-faith negotiations with Republicans. By running away from a discussion? But by fleeing from the state to to block the consideration of a bill, is against their oath. Recall them.

So they’re out spending money. It’s good for the economy.

Every one of their districts ought to be in play in a year.

At what point can the legislature and governor consider the jobs abandoned and replace them?

Another option would be to deny their pay for missing a quorum call. After missing three consecutive quorum calls, declare the representative to have vacated their position, declare the seat open and fill according to the laws.

When Indiana Dems pulled this stunt and went to Illinois, it went badly for them in subsequent elections.
