WASHINGTON—Roughly half of all cars and light trucks sold in the U.S. by 2030 would be electric, hydrogen-fuel cell and plug-in hybrid vehicles under voluntary targets set to be announced Thursday by the Biden administration and backed by auto makers, contingent on government support.
In a joint statement, General Motors Co. , Ford Motor Co. , and Chrysler maker Stellantis NV said their commitment hinges on federal funding for manufacturing and supply-chain research and development, purchase incentives and an EV-charging network.
The auto makers said the voluntary targets for EV sales “can be achieved only with the timely deployment of the full suite of electrification policies committed to” by the Biden administration in the roughly $1 trillion infrastructure plan now moving through the Senate and related initiatives.
Electric vehicles sales made up about 3% of the total U.S. market in May and June, according to industry data. The auto makers said their commitment was to have electric, fuel cell and plug-in hybrid vehicles comprise 40% to 50% of sales by 2030, saying the action “represents a dramatic shift from the U.S. market today.”
Biden administration officials, however, said the president plans to sign an executive order setting a voluntary target of 50%.
Consumers have begun warming to EVs, and auto manufacturers are laying heavy bets on the new technology.
“This industry’s going to spend $330 billion over the next five years on electrification alone,” said John Bozzella, president of the Alliance for Automotive Innovation, the lobbying group for auto makers and suppliers, at a conference Wednesday. “Even in Washington, D.C., that is real money.”
Many of these investments are going towards converting plants to making electric vehicles or building new battery factories. GM plans to open battery plants in Ohio and Tennessee as part of its joint venture

Biden and big business are setting targets for what we should drive. Do we get a say? I am reminded of the Godfather scene where Michael Corleone says, "You talked to my father about my future. MY future."
“Consumers have begun warming to EVs”
LOL. More like “warning of EV’s”..
voluntary targets or else ,LOL
I simply can’t afford one.
Just. Don’t. Have. The. Money.
It’s one thing to build millions of electric cars. It is, of course, quite another thing to find the power to charge them all.
But hey, it’s all about feeling good in the moment.
Interesting.
I just read an article yesterday talking about how lithium is going to get harder and harder to find, given all the devices that now require it. And when the batteries in these cars need replacing, it’s going to be difficult, to say the least, and very, very expensive.
I want to say that replacing the battery on a Tesla is upwards of $30k or more, if I heard Rush Limbaugh correctly. And then there’s the disposal of the old one.
F them I’ll never drive an electric car or truck - EVER
People that owned electric cars are going back to gas because electric cars are a pain to charge
Taxpayer supported private industry.
Any product derived should be free or heavily discounted for actual tax payers.
If you stand close enough to one, I guess that’s true.<
(Tesla now recommends that their cars not be parked in garages.)
Last week I was in a Tesla in CA and charging the Tesla became a highly stressful event. The move to EV is insane. Never want to be in one again.
Just think of all the starving child slaves this will put to work in the Cobalt Mines. Maybe they should be up to receive Humanitarian Awards for getting these kids Employed
How green is that?
There going to get money from the feds...bet on it...or tax breaks to buy these cars
1 in 5 electric vehicle owners in California switched back to gas because charging their cars is a hassle, research shows

” want to say that replacing the battery on a Tesla is upwards of $30k”
A place on the internet says around $12k average. Tesla warranties the batteries for 100,000 - 150,000 miles depending on the model. Tesla claims they’ll last 300,000 - 500,000 miles.
Do we get a say? LOLOLOLOLOL! SMDH! We are so screwed. These people truly are fidiots.
“Consumers have begun warming to EVs”
Just park them outside...
Yes, they are creating a huge demand for electricity while greatly reducing our electricity production.
They better think about power grid first or EVs won’t be able to charge. I’m going to buy a new ICE truck in the next couple of years. It will last the rest of my life.
Dumb Effers.
Recently I got rid of my 20+ year trim mower and bought a battery mower that had glowing reviews. I don’t hate it, but it is well below the hype. Batteries don’t last nearly as long as everyone said. Blade tip speed is slower a gas mower, meaning the cut isn’t as good or thorough. The point is, I am near certain EVs will also be far and away less desirable than all the Fandom is pledging. For most people EVs will suck compared to gas engine vehicles.
