That would message would happen, if the helmsman and the rest of the command crew are dead - the ship would be set on the last heading the helmsman turned the wheel - in this case, it looks like the ship went into a spiral before the prize crews regained control.

I believe the AIS code is NUC, or “Not Under Command”. Technically, this code should be used when you have a loss of steering, throttle or propulsion and cannot maneuver, or “command” the ship. But, it’s not that uncommon for ships just drifting offshore waiting to pull into port to set their AIS to NUC. They are telling ships in the area that they are not able to maneuver. In many cases, there is no one on the bridge capable of maneuvering the ship. I believe this is a misuse of AIS, but I’ve seen it a lot.
It’s possible the ship’s AIS was transponding NUC when they were boarded, and this code had nothing to do with the boarding, hijacking or whatever is happening.

Right? Jimmy Carter all over again.
Just saw that the Asphalt Princess radioed Fujairah Port to let them know there were “Armed Iranians onboard”. There was never any mystery about what was happening. The crew set the AIS to “Not Under Command” before leaving the bridge so everyone would know they were drifting. The crew probably locked themselves in a “safe room” and waited for help. Looks like the “Iranians” left on their own, probably after realizing they had boarded an empty 45 year old rust bucket flying a Norwegian flag and ready for the scrap heap.
Something smells here. Unless the “Iranians” boarded the wrong ship, it makes no sense. This ship was worthless.
