While COVID-19 vaccines are highly effective at preventing severe disease, hospitalization, and death from COVID-19 and also reduce the likelihood of mild or asymptomatic infection, a small share of fully vaccinated individuals do become infected, and some become hospitalized or have died. These rare occurrences are known as “breakthrough cases” which are to be expected, and historically known to occur with other vaccines as none is 100% effective.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) currently monitors hospitalizations and deaths, from any cause, among fully vaccinated individuals with COVID-19, but not breakthrough infections, which it stopped monitoring as of May 1. CDC presents this data in aggregate at the national level but not by state, and there is no single, public repository for data by state or data on breakthrough infections, since the CDC stopped monitoring them.
We therefore reviewed the websites and other official state sources for all 50 states and D.C. to see which are providing data on COVID-19 breakthrough cases, hospitalizations and deaths, how regularly, and what those data may tell us. We only used data from official state sources (we did not include data available only in news media reports, for example). Where a state did not provide comparable data on overall COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations, or deaths reported over the period in which it captured breakthrough events, we obtained data on cases and deaths from the Johns Hopkins University COVID-19 Dashboard and on hospitalizations from the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services for the appropriate period (see methods for more detail).
Importantly, not all hospitalizations and deaths of those fully vaccinated and diagnosed with COVID-19 are due to COVID-19 or have a known cause at the time of reporting. The CDC reports that as of July 19, of 5,601 hospitalized breakthrough cases, 27% were asymptomatic or not related to COVID-19 and of 1,141 fatal cases, 26% were asymptomatic or not related to COVID-19. States differ in whether they provide this detail. DC, for example, reports that as of July 11, 50% of hospitalized breakthrough cases were due to COVID-19, 19% were not, and 31% were of unknown reason. However, few states made these distinctions. Where they did, we only included breakthrough hospitalizations and deaths due to COVID-19. In other cases, some of these breakthrough events may be due to causes other than COVID-19.
Overall, we find that:
Half of states (25) report some data on COVID-19 breakthrough events (see Table 1). Twenty-four provide data on breakthrough cases, 19 on hospitalizations and on deaths. Fifteen of these states regularly update these data, often on a weekly basis. The rest use a different frequency, have one-time reports, have stopped updating, or have an unclear reporting frequency. The data reported from these states indicate that breakthrough cases, hospitalizations, and deaths are extremely rare events among those who are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 (see Figure 1). The rate of breakthrough cases reported among those fully vaccinated is well below 1% in all reporting states, ranging from 0.01% in Connecticut to 0.90% in Oklahoma. The hospitalization rate among fully vaccinated people with COVID-19 ranged from effectively zero (0.00%) in California, Delaware, D.C., Indiana, New Jersey, New Mexico, Vermont, and Virginia to 0.06% in Arkansas. (Note: Hospitalization may or may not have been due to COVID-19.) The rates of death among fully vaccinated people with COVID-19 were even lower, effectively zero (0.00%) in all but two reporting states, Arkansas and Michigan where they were 0.01%. (Note: Deaths may or may not have been due to COVID-19.)

“ Double blind studies are starting to show no advantage between some of the vaccines over placebos when faced with variants.”
***********************************************************************
Really? That’s very interesting. Got a link to those studies?
I do not speculate about motives for media and government just call out what I think is right or wrong.
*************************************
A
You’ve given no thought as to the motive of leaving the southern border wide open and covid infected people flooding across?
You’ve given no thought to the motive that covid just happens to show up when Donald Trump is about to win reelection?
You’ve given no thought to the motive as to why the government wants little children to be vaccinated and also wear masks?
You’ve given no thought to the motive as to why the media covered every even minor misstep by Trump 24/7 yet they completely ignore the grotesque flaws of Joe Biden?
Without a doubt you are either a liar or a leftist plant.
Yup...us too.
Can you cite or link these studies? I’d like to read them. I would think it very difficult to do placebo controlled at this point.
“one must either be fanatically in the covid is real and everyone needs to be vaccinated or fanatically in the there is no such thing as covid it’s all a scam and the vaccine was made just to kill people camp”
Not all here is as well defined. I’m
more in “the wait and see camp”, and
will remain until I actually suffer
symptoms before I get an injection
of a concoction that is computer
engineered and it’s implementation
is placed in the hands of a
government I don’t trust.
once you suffer symptoms there is no need to get vaccinated. You u will either survive and have natural immunity or not survive and it doesn’t matter at that point. I don’t blame folks for wait and see but it should be based on changing risk benefit not actually getting the disease.
I don’t really trust reports that don’t focus on recent weeks. A lot of relatives and friends that don’t even live anywhere near this hotspot that I’m in that were fully vaccinated have come down with COVID in the past few weeks. And I’m awaiting the results of a test to be sure, but I think I can add myself to that list as well. And I’ve had only seconds of contact with strangers unmasked the past few weeks. This delta variant is nasty.
Now, probably none of the people I’m talking about will be in ICU or die, so that’s great, but I fully suspect the messaging around breakthrough cases being “rare” will change soon as the truth comes to light. The vaccine can help save your life, but it sucks when talking about the delta variation in terms of milder disease compared to earlier variants.
And to be clear, by came down with COVID, I mean they were significantly symptomatic enough to get themselves tested. Not talking about random testing of asymptomatic people that happened to catch some.
I’m not anti-vax, and my apologies
if you misunderstood my comment. I
just refuse to take THIS vax. Should
I actually get exposed, I will seek
and take my chances with approved
methods, of which this vax is not.
I’m sorry your friends got ill and hope they recover soon. Yes breakthrough cases stink but it’s good they are milder than without the vaccine. Unfortunately this will just have to run its course. The only way to make it worse is for the government to impose more restrictions. At least in areas with decent levels of vaccinations hospitals and ICUs are not overrun.
I have read a number of articles recently mentioning the waning effectiveness of most of the vaccines as the variants become the dominant varieties of Covid. Some of them mentioned ongoing studies that have used placebo controlled methodology. For some very strange reason Google and other search engines appear to be filtering this type of article from their results making them more difficult to find, and the links for a couple that I hoped to share when I received your request are no longer working.
The ones still appearing this morning are from sources such as CNBC, MSN, Yahoo, etc... which can hardly be considered unbiased news sources. But here are a couple of those anyway. The first mentions the double blind methodology used, when claiming 65.2% effectiveness which apparently is better than other vaccines on the market...
“Covaxin, a whole-virion inactivated SARS-CoV-2 vaccine used for mass immunization in the country, showed a 65.2 percent protection against the Delta variant in a double-blind, randomized, multicentre, phase 3 clinical trial.”
“Preliminary data from the Israeli Ministry of Health suggests that Pfizer's vaccine could be only 39% effective at preventing symptomatic infections from the variant”
“If that sounds like bad news for Pfizer and Moderna shareholders, it isn't. The vaccines made by Johnson & Johnson (NYSE: JNJ) and AstraZeneca (NASDAQ: AZN) appear to perform even worse against the variant. In fact, they're suspected of performing so much worse that public health officials in places like Italy are allowing certain people who have received jabs of these two vaccines to get booster shots of Pfizer or Moderna. This hodgepodge vaccination solution is supported by a growing body of evidence, and it's bad news for AstraZeneca as well as Johnson & Johnson.”
https://news.yahoo.com/delta-infections-among-vaccinated-likely-192553854.html
“They note that in COVID-19 survivors, the immune system's antibodies evolve during the first year, becoming more potent and better able to resist new variants. In 32 volunteers who never had COVID-19, they found that antibodies induced by mRNA vaccines did evolve between the first and second shots.”
I am not sure why you two believe that the CDC recently recommended people who are vaccinated start wearing masks again in public.
"recent mask guidance update is based on a study that evaluated the efficacy of a COVID-19 vaccine that’s “not approved in America.” The article appears to be making reference to the Covaxin vaccine study mentioned in the first link above. More recent studies of vaccines which have been approved here are showing that their effectiveness is waning when faced with variants. It would appear that the results are currently being actively delayed, suppressed or otherwise withheld from the public which is likely the primary reason why the CDC is not citing them. The CDC knows why they are now recommending masks for the vaccinated but sharing the data will further undermine the public's confidence in the "experimental vaccines". There is a reason that there have been no successful vaccines for the illness most similar to Covid, the common cold. Rhinoviruses and coronaviruses are constantly evolving rendering traditional vaccines ineffective in a short period of time. This is why the mRNA "experimental vaccines" were introduced for the coronavirus; it was hoped that their effectiveness would be more long lived. Unfortunately it now appears that juiced up gain of function simple one cell organisms are now easily defeating the mRNA technique. This entire botched up experiment is not performing in a way that resembles the claims made by authorities. Fortunately as Covid mutates it appears that the symptoms are becoming less severe even as it becomes easier to catch which will mean that the miracle of the human immune system once again will hopefully save humanity. And the wishes of the recently deceased Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh that he would come back as a deadly virus after death and kill most of the people on earth... will not be realized.
Sorry, forgot to include the html needed to break up my last paragraph.
So you think these items are evidence supporting the following statement of yours that I questioned in post 63 above?
“Double blind studies are starting to show no advantage between some of the vaccines over placebos when faced with variants.”
As I clearly stated the links that I was referring to were no longer working this morning. But even the mostly biased sources still available all still indicate the that the experimental “vaccines” are quickly losing their effectiveness. As expected the mRNA gene therapy treatments have held up slightly better... if you believe 39% effectiveness is worthwhile, but the AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson are now a complete waste of time and effort.
“In fact, they're suspected of performing so much worse that public health officials in places like Italy are allowing certain people who have received jabs of these two vaccines to get booster shots of Pfizer or Moderna.”
What do you think the meaning of “suspected of performing so much worse” is actually referring to here? Here is my interpretation: They don't work against the now prevalent variants and the results of the studies showing this and even articles talking about what is now known are now being suppressed to maintain the public's faith in the vaccines. How do you explain links that were working a couple days ago all saying basically the same thing that are now are all no longer functioning?
You are beating on a dead horse. The "standard" vaccines are already completely worthless and the mRNA vaccines are nearly worthless with as yet unknown long term side effects and a track record of more death and injury than all other vaccines combined in the last 30 years. As I have stated repeatedly... I have been a strong advocate for vaccinations for many decades. As a long time Hazmat Team leader I have taken many more vaccines than just about anyone here. The abysmal failure of these "vaccines" will undermine the public's confidence in vaccinations for decades to come resulting in millions of additional deaths from fully preventable disease. And I am talking real deaths, not the faked bullsh*t we have been subjected to over the past 18 months.
Just heard from a friend of mine that her mother got the shot a week ago and is now having dementia-like confusion and memory loss. My husband suggested she take her mom to get checked for clots as she could be having mini-strokes.
Yep, if it’s no worse than a bad cold or flu, no big deal.
And I guess it’s darned if you do, darned if you don’t in terms of messaging. No matter how one chooses to describe the delta variant, the types that still have yet to get vaccinated will twist it to justify their decision. Seems like the only thing getting through to some people is suffering a personal loss/close call. And that’s sad. But as you said, things have to continue.
My mom and dad got the Pfizer and within a week my mother went from healthy and active going for long walks and to the YMCA everyday to an invalid. She can’t make it to the bathroom without assistance. She has pain all over the place, and yes her mental status now varies greatly. This has now been going on for months. Every time the phone rings I worry that I am about to be told that she is dead.
My brother has been a captain for a major airline for decades. He got the Moderna shots; at his mandatory FAA flight physical a month later he was grounded because his heart was swollen and inflamed. He has never had any heart issues in the past. A month after that his heart was back to normal and he was allowed to fly again. But it is not just teenage boys having this type of issue.
Based on the recommendations of numerous doctors (including some right here on FR), I would strongly suggest that if you or anyone you know begins to show symptoms alongside a positive COVID-19 test, you immediately seek out an infusion center that can provide monoclonal antibody therapy. The research and the reports from actual doctors using it show that it’s extremely effective at preventing cases from escalating. It’s what they gave President Trump when he was hospitalized with COVID-19.
The risk of serious illness for vaccinated people is very, very low. Even those who are hospitalized end up leaving after a couple days. But even if the chances are 1 in a million, why not drop that risk to 1 in 100 million instead?
In terms of the vaccines, I think that Pfizer and Moderna are just waiting for their BLA (full FDA approval) to come through. It should be here soon, and once it does, they can release a Delta-specific shot under a BLA addendum like how the updated flu shots are each year. That should be trivial for them to do (just update the nucleotide sequence and start producing the new version), but right now they’d have to spend nearly a year doing clinical trials to get it out the door. If/when they can do it, I would expect it to have similar efficacy as the existing vaccines had pre-Delta. That means blocking transmissions very effectively.
