I don’t suppose they use GPS on this shipment?

I found the story that the package was found when I was trying to find some info on an accident with an Ir-192 source in Yanango, Peru in 1999. The radioactive source for inspecting pipeline welds fell off of its feedline (source goes inside the pipeline allow the welds to be x-rayed) and a worker found it, put it in his back pocket and carried it home. His leg had to be amputated and family members were injured too.
A full report is at https://www.iaea.org/publications/6090/the-radiological-accident-in-yanango. There are pictures of the injuries which are not pleasant. The first few sections describing the accident are good (well, a little dry for an engineering accident report), but turn back at section 5 where the burn injury and infection pictures start.

There’s one of the Harry Bosch stories that involves a cancer doctor who is coerced into stealing radioactive materials that are used for cancer treatment. I remember Harry gets sick from them somehow, but I really don’t remember anything else (like who the bad guys were or why they wanted this stuff). But that’s why I like mysteries, I never retain what happens and I can read them over and over. But I think I’ll skip the accident report from Peru. You’d think folks working around that stuff would be trained in how to handle it. I feel bad for that fellow and his family.

Watch for those backwood mail-hating survivalists. Take refuge in a nearby farmhouse.
