It's like these idiots around me that put those muffler packs on their pick'emup trucks to shake every window within 500 yards.

This yearning to be "specialer"(tattoos on the face/purple hair/Karen-culture)...perhaps a "progressive" product of the "me" generation?

As a society, are we completely unprepared for a TRUE/REAL calamity?

I'd say, yes.

Because under such a scenario...things'll get real nasty, real fast...with our indignant, entitled masses weeping and gnashing of teeth.
