As were both Bush presidents, John McCain and most of the Republicans in the House and Senate who voted for the WTO, NAFTA, CAFTA and the other “free trade” bills that opened our markets to mercantilist nations protecting their own markets while stealing intellectual property and subsidizing exports. Meanwhile the big Wall Street banks made a fortune financing the building of factories in foreign countries and assisting in the disposal of assets in the US. Not to mention all of the insider stock trading based on advance knowledge of outsourcing announcements.
Both political parties strongly supported the policies resulting in the deindustrializaton of the United States and politicians of both parties became wealthy on the insider deals. As did multinational corporation executives. Don’t forget all of the “non-profits” and consultants who were paid millions by the federal government (i.e. taxpayer) to retrain the displaced factory workers for those nonexistent “coding” jobs Biden always talks about. Add to that all the bureaucrats hired to provide social services for the unemployed in towns that were economically devastated. Drug lords and doctors writing prescriptions for opioids got their share as the people in economically devastated towns with no employment prospects turned to drugs and alcohol. The destruction of US manufacturing made many people in this country extremely wealthy. It was the middle class that paid the price.
Pelosi and Schumer certainly got their share. However, the powers that run the Republican party were just as guilty and perhaps more. Another reason if anyone thinks the Republican party is going to save the Republic, they are destined to be disappointed.
In the 1990’s, when the trade deals were negotiated and the outsourcing frenzy began there was one voice trying to warn the people of this country what was happening — Ross Perot. He was dismissed as a crazy nutcase. The middle class Reagan coalition loyally voted for the globalist free trader George H.W. Bush. Perot siphoned off enough votes to ensure Bush lost and Bill Clinton won in 1992. Then Clinton secured signage of the NAFTA treaty Bush had negotiated and cozied up to China.
Perot was the canary in the coal mine. Had he won in 1992, he would have been destroyed by the Washington politican/media alliance the same way Trump was destroyed.
