San Francisco is considering a congestion pricing plan that would charge motorists for entering the busy downtown core -- but only if they make more than $46,000 per year.
The San Francisco County Transportation Authority is leading the city’s study on the proposal to charge a fee to any drivers who enter the downtown zone, details of which were reported by the San Francisco Chronicle.
London has used a similar congestion charge scheme for nearly a decade, but it does not include an income threshold. New York City is currently considering a daily charge of $14 for motorists who enter certain parts of Manhattan.

So $46,000 is NOW rich in San Francisco, boy the whole damn place must be homeless now!!! LOL, LOL
You will be issued a privilege card.
Considering the cost of living in that area $46k seems not rich. Also how would they know how much you make? Seems a poorly considered plan…
You’re going to have beater cars clogging the downtown.
$46K is the equivalent of $20K in my flyover metro area. That is dirt poor..
Do our humble representatives challenge each other to see who can propose the stupidest ideas? And who can waste the most money?
46K isn’t rich in East St. Louis…
A “rich” driver. Sort of like a guy in Venezuela with a loaf of bread and a bicycle.
Makes sense. Most rich people make more than $46 K per year.
Just what the shops and businesses of downtown SF need…more incentive to not visit them. Ugh.
Why oh why do we find out so much from the UK Daily Mail. They seem to have way better reporters than our news people.
That has been my response to NYC costs; I am a dozen miles to the west and never go there.
Threatening someone like me with limitations on entering entertainment venues if I’m not vaccinated is a waste of time; haven’t been to nearby Giants stadium for decades...
I am sure illegals get them for free. When I see traffic in places like LA and San Fran, I always think to myself...”hmmmm, wouldn’t it be better if we added millions of drivers to the roads?”
I think the old saying is, some ideas are so stupid, only a rat 🐀 could think of it.
It’s a form of offshoring. Our media is so bad they stepped in the void.
“Also how would they know how much you make?”
Shhhhh, you shouldn’t ask that question. But since you did, the answer is easy - look at your California Tax Return. And if you don’t have a California Tax Return, you get charged the money, unless you can be PROVE you make under $46k. Here are the ways:
1. Submit a copy of your federal return, along with filling out Form 8821 to allow verification of such return. If unable (maybe a non-US resident) or did not file, then one of the following:
2. Prove you are here illegally
3. Prove you are a full-time student
4. Prove that you are neither white nor Asian.
That should cover most of the situations.
Rich? $46K? San Fransicko? Geeze...that might be good money in Kansas City but that’s a poverty wage in SF.
The city has gone completely insane.
Ditto for me in Boston. I enter the city for two,and only two, reasons: medical care and the airport.Haven’t been to a professional sporting event..restaurant...etc,etc there in decades. The suburbs have everything I need or want except for the two things mentioned above.
