Yes, “devolving” is a good word. We seem to have opined here that this “justice” is permissible in this case, on a guy opening fire into a crowd like that. But what if it’s just some Trump supporter that a mob doesn’t like? Or if someone is involved in a traffic accident and the mob thinks that person was somehow at fault?

If we had an honest justice system, it would mete out the appropriate remedy for crimes committed. But while it no longer does so, this is not the appropriate remedy.

This is how it starts. Someone gets what’s coming to him and people approve, so the idea and willingness to engage in mob justice spreads.

But as you point out, eventually it will be used against people, not for crime but for wrongthink or the the perception of wrongthink.

Most of the posters on this thread are approving of this “street justice” without realizing how nasty the endgame will be.
