India will be keen to buy a newly unveiled Russian stealth fighter to help counter China’s forces along their disputed border, according to military analysts. Earlier this week the Russian aircraft maker Sukhoi unveiled a prototype of its new “Checkmate” jet at the MAKS-2021 International Aviation and Space Salon outside Moscow. The maker highlighted its stealth abilities and relatively low cost, which is expected to be a major selling point internationally. Sukhoi said the fifth-generation fighter had a top speed of Mach 2 and an operational range of 3,000km (1,865 miles) and a payload of 7.4 tonnes. It is expected to make its maiden flight in 2023 and deliveries could start in 2026. Russia plans to produce 300 of the planes over 15 years to replace its depleted fighter squadrons.

Like the ChiComs haven’t had the Russian and our stealth plans already delivered to them.

Well, this article was published by the South China Morning Post, which is owned by Alibaba and effectively under the control of the Chinese government. So that needs to be factored into anything published by that paper.

India has long relied on Russian hardware. Their attempts at domestic military hardware have generally been disasters. Reverse engineering doesn’t seem to be an Indian skill.

Russia: “It is so stealthy, you can’t even see it. There is a dozen of them, right over there (points to empty field)”

Engineers: “We need 10 months to build the prototype”
Management: “We promised it in 3 weeks. It must be done by then. No excuses.”
Engineers: “Fine”

You are selling them short. When the original Flanker was worth $40 million, HAL managed to assemble it for $72 million from SKD kit, and also screwed up in the process, producing fiery crashes, requiring replacement units. That’s a lot of rupees out of thin air.

I thought the tech industry was the only one where the sales team sold lies and then the engineers got blamed when the product didn’t work as promised.

I was thinking of the failed tank project. And a failed ship project (maybe a submarine? I don’t remember the details).

Hey India; consider US planes.

Even older models will probably do better when all is said and done.

Or….lots & lots of drones. Not made in China, of course.

In that realm, the project managers overpromise and the engineers just fake it.

I’ve been a Programmer for 40 years and I have worked with lots of them. Basically, if you work under one, you leave.

I had one assume the position over me and I turned in my notice immediately. Management tried to intervene because they wanted one English speaker but I refused. I knew what was coming.

Undoubtedly. But the Indians are spooked by the possibility that they buy US planes and try to use them against Pakistan and China (their two biggest enemies), only to see the US impose an arms embargo and refuse to provide needed spare parts. Pakistan is a US ally and one of the biggest recipients of our foreign aid.

This entry fully describes the job of a project engineer.

producing fiery crashes, requiring replacement units.

few fiery crashes of the Su30MKI. The initial troubles were related to un-commanded activation of the ejection seats . Including once when the plane was in the hanger and both pilots were killed. The accident rate of the Su30 is likely comparable to the F-15 for the number of flight hours each frame puts in, though I do not have actual figures.

It is the vintage MiG 21s that are falling out of the sky. They should be gone in 3 years. Hopefully in 2.

The IAF did not pursue the Su 57 despite sinking a billion dollars in development of that frame brcause the Russians themselves don't really want it. The IAF will take a really long hard look at the Checkmate before they commit. If they ever do. They prefer western frames over Russian. So the Rafale. The Hercules. The Hawk trainer. MH-60 (?)Romeo choppers for the navy etc.....

Previously American frames were out of reach due to threat of sanctions. same with the Eurofighter. Germany and Italy get stuck with their ideology. Hence the Rafale. The French are happy with selling to India. Fighters, Subs... Refused spares to upgrade Paki Mirage F.1s after the Paki PM wanted his head.

Good luck with the American frames, bud. You’d need a lot of it with the maintenance culture.

lol. the Russian frames are extremely maintenance intensive. The western frames are not. The Indian Air Force has always had British and French aircraft. Still flying the Jaguar and Mirage 2000s. Which is why the Russians are falling out of favour. At one time 60% of the Suckhoi fleet was inop. Finally settled around 60% aircraft availability. The Mirages are at 70% and even the vintage Jaguars are at 60% or so readiness.

Sure, whatever floats your boat.
Although if you’d look at how Hmeyim AFB works in Syria, you’d never have such an availability and intensity with Western frames.
