WASHINGTON — Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said Republicans won't support a debt limit hike, drawing fierce backlash from Democrats who accused him of plotting to sabotage the economy.
The Kentucky Republican suggested that Democrats should act alone to lift the debt ceiling, a move that experts say is necessary later this year to avert a default that could tank the U.S. and global economy.
"I can’t imagine there will be a single Republican voting to raise the debt ceiling after what we’ve been experiencing," McConnell told Punchbowl News in an interview published Wednesday morning. "I can’t imagine a single Republican in this environment that we’re in now — this free-for-all for taxes and spending — to vote to raise the debt limit," he added.

This is Mitch attempting to get the Congress back to the glory days of pretending to oppose each other in a fake battle.
Because McConnell and his ilk don't have the stomach for REAL battle.
Remember the "fiscal cliff" where McConnell "negotiated" a solution that reversed congressional purse powers. The debt ceiling would go up automatically UNLESS two thirds of the Congress disallowed it (which wasn't going to happen). When in Constitutional reality, the United States can't borrow money without Congress' APPROVAL, not disallowal.
Mitch wants to get back to the old games.
But they're fake.
The usual kabuki theater...
Maybe. But Mitch has actually said this at least twenty times since January. There is some type of negotiation that he wants. It might be awful marginal to most of us in terms of the ‘deal’, but I would suggest a one-month ‘nothing happening’ period, with the stock market in some minor spiral.
Throw in the apartment and mortgage failure evictions going on in August...it might be a pretty negative month for a lot of folks.
The article says “later this year”. It’s pretty soon…August 1st.
The debt ceiling was suspended for 2 years due to Covid. We’ve blown past the automatic increases and it will need a bill voted on by Congress and signed by Slow Joe to pass. IIRC it CAN be filibustered.
This is an effective tool to be used against the trillions of dollars of wasteful deficit spending Dems want.
“… but I would suggest a one-month ‘nothing happening’ period, with the stock market in some minor spiral.”
My thoughts too.
“This is Mitch attempting to get the Congress back to the glory days of pretending to oppose each other in a fake battle.”
Yep. Reminds me of the WWF with only with ugly skinny guys.
The rats do not need the rethuglicans to pass this. I believe that is what McConnell is saying. In an upcoming election year, this is good ammo for the thugs to accuse every rat of tax and spend.
At the best, this will be entertaining. Unfortunately, it is going to have a negative impact on the global economy, or whatever is left of it.
We are living in looneyville. Democrats are avoiding the political backlash which would come from raising taxes by simply printing money and spending it. The result is that your income tax doesn’t get raised. Instead, the value of every dollar of wealth you hold gets decreased by the percentage which the government overspends.
If Trump was in the Oval Office McConnell would not be able to raise the debt ceiling fast enough, and Schumer would be the one chattering about letting them do it themselves.
And if you believe that I got a bridge to sell you!!!!!
sorry mcconnel but...
We see you.
We know who and what you are.
The only question that remains is, what are WE going to do about it?
McConnell is a lot more talk than action. He has done the right thing a few times...very few.
“The rats do not need the rethuglicans to pass this. I believe that is what McConnell is saying.”
There are a few ways the debt ceiling can be raised. The traditional method is a standalone vote.
It could be added to another bill, once again with a vote.
It could be added in the reconciliation of a bill, avoiding a possible filibuster from options 1 & 2.
What BS. These people are always for hikes, until they’re against it.
Government loves money, power, and control. Period.
McConnell waiting for the highest bit to arrive.
