LIMA (Reuters) - Peruvian police said on Wednesday they had dismantled an alleged criminal ring that had charged as much $21,000 per bed for seriously ill COVID-19 patients in a state-run hospital, aggravating care in a country hit by one of the world's deadliest outbreaks of the virus....

...The hospital involved in the more recent scandal, administered by the EsSalud social security system, provides free care. Patients must endure a long waiting list for the 80 ICU beds the hospital offers.

During the peak of the pandemic, many patients paid large sums of money to private clinics as the public system neared collapse. The number of available ICU beds has since soared to nearly 3,000 nationwide, compared to just hundreds available in March last year, but beds are still in high demand....

Surely Peru isn't the lone ranger. I wonder how many other socialist countries are selling hospital access?

It’ll be fine now that they’ve elected the new, far-left President, because we all know the socialists are the Good People who Care.

“I wonder how many other socialist countries are selling hospital access?”

You mean like the USA? IIRC, our hospitals were doing the same, i.e., benefiting financially for from Covid patients. That’s why they chalked up thousands of non-Covid deaths as Covid — because they were paid more for them from taxpayer money.

Someone on a talk show in the last couple days took it farther saying that it won’t be long before patients will have to pay without government subsidies.

lol, I meant hospital administrators that were selling beds to people not the govt. Now, graft in Myanmar isn’t a problem - they’re sending teams house to house to collect bodies - no doctors or nurses in their hospitals at all because of a general strike against the military junta. The USA isn’t so bad.
