The MP for Calais today rubbished Priti Patel's latest £54million ($73 million) payment to France, claiming that the deal is pointless because migrants will 'just find somewhere else to cross' - as 20 more arrived today after the number of Channel crossings in 2021 hits a record annual high of 8,452.
Pierre-Henri Dumont told the BBC this morning that the length of France's coastline and the large number of places where migrants could hide before crossing the English Channel meant that people-smugglers would always find a way to evade the authorities.
His extraordinary remarks are a blow to the Home Secretary, who is desperately searching for solution to the crisis in the Channel after overseeing the highest ever number of annual arrivals at 8,452 as of yesterday - already surpassing the figure for the whole of 2020.
Mr Dumont told Radio 4's Today programme: 'The fact is, having more money, having more police, having more controls will not prevent more crossing attempts. We have too many kilometers of shore to monitor. They can hide in a lot of places, there are a lot of roads, woods and trees.
'So even if you are monitoring 100pc of a small or large part of the French coast the smugglers will find somewhere to cross somewhere else. If it's not Calais they will go to Normandy, if not Normandy then Belgium or the Netherlands.'
Former Border Force chief Tony Smith called on Britain and France to begin joint patrols so guards could begin turning boats back at sea. He also dismissed British plans for tough four-year sentences for migrants who entered Britain illegally, arguing this would not work with people who were already desperate enough to risk the dangerous crossing.

The English Channel migrant crisis is the poisoned chalice of UK politics. Has been for decades.
Every time a new broom is appointed, s/he will “resolve the problem” - and the numbers just get worse.
Perhaps it’s time to do nothing? With no lifeboats/Navy patrolling the Channel, the illegals will know it’s much more dangerous (due to increased likelihood of drowning). Perhaps they will go back to hiding in the back of trucks crossing by ferry/rail?
