To Free Cuba, Make Guantanamo the New Ellis Island
The New York Sun ^ | July 19, 2021 | Ira Stoll

The people of Cuba are demonstrating extraordinary bravery by rising up for freedom and democracy against their brutal communist dictatorship. President Biden is reacting with a disgraceful display of foreign policy clumsiness.

There’s no better demonstration to the world that freedom and democracy beat the so-called socialist paradise of Cuba than hundreds of thousands of people voluntarily picking up and leaving.

The incoming immigrants would enrich America. Cuban-Americans whose families arrived in earlier waves of migration have been distinguished contributors to American life. They include Senators Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio, members of Congress Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, Mario Diaz-Balart, and Maria Salazar, jazz musicians such as Arturo Sandoval, Chico O’Farrill, and Paquito D’Rivera, athletes like Olympic gold-medal swimmer Ryan Lochte and all-star Red Sox slugger J.D. Martinez. The father of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is a Cuban immigrant.

Further delay by Mr. Biden would fuel criticism that his foreign policy is being driven by naïve delusions rather than American interests and democratic values. The president has an opportunity, instead, to transform Guantanamo from a synonym for a terrorist prison into a modern-day Ellis Island.

Why would the rats want people coming here to tell how horrible communism is when that’s exactly what the rats are trying to establish here?

The way things are going, Cuber could become the better place to be under the Jack Boot of Gov’t.

I read The Cuban Affair by DeMille recently. It’s bad there. My son’s mother in law was tortured by Castro’s goons - her father had been an ambassador - from France I think - and they killed him. She escaped with the help of a priest, got to Europe and married a Russian who was fleeing communism.

But yes...I’m actually really worried about what’s going on here. Between covid and CRT too many people are surrendering to the insanity.

While illegals waltz across the border?

No!

Close the border FIRST!

Nicer climate than many locations in the US, except for the hurricanes.

From the article: incoming Cuban refugees could be entirely eliminated by inviting the Cubans seeking freedom and democracy to make their way by land to Guantanamo. At the navy base, their applications could be processed, they could be vaccinated against Covid-19, and they could eventually be transported safely to America by airplane or in seaworthy vessels.

That's a reasonable approach to immigration. BUT, if the Biden admin put that into place for Cuba, it would a stark contrast to how they are handling the border with Mexico, so it seems unlikely that it would happen. I suppose it could happen during the 2nd Trump term, or the 1st DeSantis term.

Besides, would Cuba let this happen, or would this turn into another humanitarian tragedy like the Berlin Wall, with running people getting shot while they try to escape to America?

Our ship made a stop at Guantanamo and it was the only place I've ever been where the swimming pool water was so hot that we had to get out because it was too uncomfortable. You can guarantee most Cubans don't have air conditioning. It must be Hell.

Why is every solution to bring them all here?

The first wave of Cubans in 1960 were the business owners and the professional class. Most of them had European ancestors. Most of them voted Republican.

The second wave of Cubans started in 1980 and continues today.

Most of those folks are working class. Most of them have African and Caribbean ancestors. Most of them vote Democrat.

There is a similar story for pre-1980 Filipinos and Haitians.

The first large groups of Haitian immigrants voted 45%-50% Republican in south Florida.

Filipinos were voting 60% Republican as late as 1996, when Bob Dole got 48% of the Asian vote against Clinton and Perot.

In 2016, after 30 years of massive immigration, Hillary Clinton got 61% of the Filipino vote, and almost 80% of the Haitian vote.

Bottom Line - when New York Democrats move to Florida, they do NOT start voting Republican. Same story for post-1980 immigrants.

No, this is a terrible idea. We’re overrun with immigrants as it is. Taking the ambitious and freedom loving from Cuba does nothing to free the residents there, either.

Meanwhile we have massive issues of freedom here that we need to address most pressingly!

That’s not all, they would likely vote Republican, not Democrat and ruin the Dim plan to take over Florida.

I read the article yesterday-not worth remembering. The Mariel boat lift-cost Carter his re-election and allowed Castro to flush his toilet-not mentioned. 3rd year of his 4 year term. This is Biden’s first. A lot of damage going on w/Mexico and nothing can be done for 4 YEARS! While people are arguing about anything and everything all the drama works in their favor.

I could be wrong, but I believe the Cuban military has assets all around Guantanamo to keep such things from happening.

Thank you! I have respect for Cubans, and I believe the country has great potential. They need to stay there and change their country.

“to transform Guantanamo from a synonym for a terrorist prison into a modern-day Ellis Island.”

I knew a woman who immigrated from Cuba in I think 94. She said she spent months at Guantanamo before being relocated to the United States. I don’t think this is anything new.

I double checked myself to make sure I was correct. This is an article from a woman who spent time in Guantanamo during that same time period.

“My understanding of the US naval base at Guantánamo Bay (GTMO) comes primarily from my experiences as a Cuban refugee between the years 1994-1995”
