America the Outlier: Voter Photo IDs Are the Rule in Europe and Elsewhere

Democrats and much of the media are pushing to make permanent the extraordinary, pandemic-driven measures to relax voting rules during the 2020 elections – warning anew of racist voter “suppression” otherwise. Yet democracies in Europe and elsewhere tell a different story – of the benefits of stricter voter ID requirements after hard lessons learned.

A database on voting rules worldwide compiled by the Crime Prevention Research Center, which I run, shows that election integrity measures are widely accepted globally, and have often been adopted by countries after they've experienced fraud under looser voting regimes.

Britain is Europe's outlier in generally not requiring voter IDs, but Prime Minister Boris Johnson aims to change that. He went to the polls in May with wife-to-be Carrie Symonds. AP Photo/Matt Dunham Of 47 nations surveyed in Europe -- a place where, on other matters, American progressives often look to with envy -- all but one country requires a government-issued photo voter ID to vote. The exception is the U.K., and even there voter IDs are mandatory in Northern Ireland for all elections and in parts of England for local elections. Moreover, Boris Johnson’s government recently introduced legislation to have the rest of the country follow suit…

Seventy-four percent of European countries entirely ban absentee voting for citizens who reside domestically. Another 6% limit it to those hospitalized or in the military, and they require third-party verification and a photo voter ID. Another 15% require a photo ID for absentee voting.

Similarly, government-issued photo IDs are required to vote by 33 nations in the 37-member Organistion for Economic Co-operation and Development (which has considerable European overlap). Only the UK, Japan, New Zealand, and Australia currently do not require IDs.…

Too bad The Stupid Party never bothers to mention this while trying to pass honest voter laws here in America. GOP Senators and Congressmen should be in-your-face with the democrats on this topic.

There are probably a hundred things which you can’t accomplish in Germany, without the national ID being shown.

If you were audited on the train with a rail-pass, they could ask for the ID, and without it...they call the cops. Trying to register a car without the ID...nothing happens until you show the ID. Looking youthful and trying to buy beer...they ask for the national ID. Trying to open an account at the bank or some investment firm....that ID has to be shown. If they printed special tickets for a soccer game, with the name on the ticket...the odds are that the ID will be asked at entry.

Cost? 37 Euro (roughly $45), good for ten years. Youth cards (for 16 to 24 year olds), around 22 Euro ($26) for 6 years.

None of what you mentioned can be done here without a PHOTO ID.

Apparently blacks and other minorities are more capable in Europe than they are here.

HOW DELAWARE ELECTED BIDEN FOR 50 YEARS

Delaware Democrats have been trying to reform state voting laws, particularly the more dated ones.

In addition to pushing for no-excuse absentee voting, lawmakers want to allow an automatic voter registration system at the Division of Motor Vehicles.

Senate Bill 5 proposes that anyone getting a driver’s license with proof of citizenship would automatically be registered. They’d later be notified by mail, where they could then choose their political party.

Another bill, House Bill 25, would let voters register to vote on the same day as an election. Right now, the deadline to register is about four weeks beforehand. Applicants would need a government-issued photo ID and proof of their address.

“We’re in a posture in Delaware, where we are attempting to expand voting rights in really significant ways where most of the headlines these days are states that are moving forward with restricting voting access,” said Dwayne Bensing, a legal expert with the American Civil Liberties Union of Delaware.

“But I guess in some ways, Delaware is also trying to catch up with a lot of states.”

As long as we have RCV enabled voting machines, even if every voter is a legal voter, elections can still be stolen.

Which is why Deep State has those RCV provisions in HR1, and why it’s so happy to keep the conversation focused on Voter ID.

Yes, we need Voter ID.

But we also need to go back to dumb voting machines.

As long as you think voting can ever make our situation better you are part of the problem.

We are ruled by an idiocracy who got where they are by other idiots voting.

Giving the idiots ID cards will only encourage them to vote more, when what we need is less voting.

Geee, it's almost as if the GOP really doesn't want to pass "honest voter laws here in America."

Goes back to the bad old days in the South (and in the West honestly).

Jim crow laws had various laws to limit voting (Literacy tests for instance), and that became a dog whistle for certain people.

Think about how much life would have been different if a bunch of pampered idiots picked their own cotton.

The small but quite influential nation of Singapore requires all citizens to carry a government issued ID card. You cannot vote in Singapore without showing your Government issued ID card and you must show up to vote on election day only!!! That fraud prevention policy has been in effect for about twenty years!!!

of course they are and they always have been. India, Mexico, Canada, pretty much everywhere BUT the US. We have the most unsecure elections of any western country by far. I wish we had the election integrity laws of France. No mail in. Show photo ID. Vote on voting day. Precincts report by the end of the day. Vote is counted with opposition party members sitting on both sides of each vote counter literally right next to them. Any disputed ballots go into the dispute box to be decided by a committee for that purpose.

It should be the same in every state.
