The argument “if the grid is out...” is just like saying “if petrol runs out in my area...”Well, except, at least in my area, the grid is out regularly. Gasoline hasn't run out since the mid 70s, uless you count when the grid's down and the pumps aren't running to get it out of the storage tanks.
Could be because electricity is provided by a government defined monopoly and gasoline is provided by the private sector.
Widespread electric car use is a non-starter without one of three things happening: 1) A massive investment to modernize the grid and power plants. 2) Discovery of a new power source that quickly and easily distributes power production locally. 3) A drastic drop in population.
